Book of the Month for January 2007
January 8, 2007
Dear Faculty, Students and Parents:
January’s principal’s book of the month is Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. Freckle Juice is a comical depiction of how far a student will go to get something he really wants. This entertaining book captures a young boy’s quest to gain freckles and what he will put himself through to make it happen. This book also shows the compassion of his teacher and how she helps him recover.
The book’s main character is Andrew Marcus. Andrew decided that if he had as many freckles as his friend, Nicky, his mother wouldn’t know when he was dirty. The freckles were his way of not having to wash as often. In Andrew’s desperate search to get freckles, he turns to a fellow student, Sharon – the self proclaimed “know-it-all”. For a price, she will help him get his precious freckles.
After reading Freckle Juice, think about a time when you took some bad advice out of desperation. How did it turn out? What did you learn from this experience?
I hope that you enjoy Freckle Juice as much as my kids and I did. It was a great opportunity for me to explain the importance of taking advice from people who are trustworthy.
Happy reading,
