Book of the Month for March

Cover image for Holes

March 1, 2006

Dear Faculty, Students and Parents:

March's Principal's Book of the Month is Holes by Louis Sachar.  This Newberry Award winning book captures a young boy's struggles at a detention center called Camp Green Lake.  This story depicts fairness, commitment, tolerance, resilience and dedication.

The book's main character is Stanley Yelnats.  Stanley is unjustly sent to Camp Green Lake in Texas.  This detention center is home to some rough kids and is in an area of Texas that is hot and filled with rattlesnakes and deadly spotted lizards.  The purpose of Camp Green Lake is to build character in the young men that are in the detention center.  However, Stanly soon learns that the activities that are meant to build character may have a different purpose.  The warden of Camp Green lake may a specific need for the five feet deep and five feet in diameter holes that the kids are digging.  As you read Holes, the humorous absurdity will keep you entertained and guessing what's on the next page.

After reading Holes, think about a time when you have been an underdog.  How did you react to the situation?  Who did you turn to for help?  How did that situation make you a better person?

Happy reading,
Phillip D. Page, Ed. D.
