Book of the Month for October
To celebrate Hispanic Heritage month, I have chosen a book that focuses on the special relationship between a young boy and his grandfather. Our October Principal’s Book of the Month, A Day’s Work by Eve Bunting, eloquently captures this relationship and its importance on an impressionable boy.
The book’s main characters are Francisco and his grandfather. Francisco is determined to help his grandfather find work. In order to get his abuelo work, Francisco must lie to the contractor who is looking to hire a gardener for one of his projects. As the story unfolds, Francisco’s dishonesty results in a “teachable moment” for his grandfather - A moment that defines the responsibility that we all have in teaching enduring values to our children and students.
After reading A Day’s Work, think about your role model(s) and the values that you have learned from them. How have they shaped your value system? How have they helped you build your character? What lessons in character did Francisco’s abuelo teach him?
I hope that you enjoy A Day’s Work as much as my children and I did. It gave me an opportunity to reflect on the importance of my value system and how I teach those values to my children.
Happy reading, Phillip D. Page, Ed.D. Principal |
