Dear Faculty, Students and Parents:
To begin the 2005-2006 school year, I have chosen a book that pays tribute to the memory of New York’s Twin Towers. Our September Principal’s Book of the Month, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein, brings to life the excitement and intrigue that surrounded the Twin Towers as they were being built in 1974.
The book’s central character is a young French aerialist named Philippe Petit. He loves to entertain the people of New York City with his tricks on a high wire. His loves to challenge himself with adventurous acts. Philippe decided that he would do both by secretly connecting a wire between the Twin Towers. What happened next is still discussed to this day. Though the towers are just a memory, Philippe is still a legend on the streets of New York – thirty-one years after his amazing feat.
As you read The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, imagine what your reaction would be to seeing his stunt. Was his risk worth his reward? Do you agree with the judge’s decision?
I hope that you enjoy The Man Who Walked Between the Towers as much as my children and I did. It is a fun and amazing story about a man who did the unthinkable between two buildings that will forever be etched in our memories.
Happy reading,
Phillip D. Page, Ed.D. Principal |
