On this year’s SAT, Kell was one of seven of Cobb’s 14 high schools that had combined totals higher than the national average of 1511. Kell High School had the biggest gain by posting an average score of 1537, which is a 23-point improvement over 2007, and 26 points higher than the national average.

Newsweek magazine included nine high schools from the Cobb County School District in its list of America’s Top Public High Schools. Only 1,358 schools made the list, based on a ‘Challenge Index’ devised by Newsweek that gauges participation rates for Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests. Congratulations to Scott Stephens. Scott Stephens of Kell High School is the 2008-2009 Cobb County High School Teacher of the Year. Stephens, a Latin teacher at Kell, has taught in Cobb for more than two decades. A graduate of Sprayberry High School, Mr. Stephens was inspired to become an educator through positive experiences with his own teachers. As instructor of a language that has existed for thousands of years, he strives for students to understand what they have in common with people who lived 2,000 years ago. “I hear from students that they learn a lot about life in my class. I try to be a person of integrity, and I encourage them to be the same. I know from experience that the least likely kid may choose me as a role model, so I have to set an example. My students know that there is always something to laugh about. They also know that, as Virgil said, ‘Labor omnia vincit,’ work conquers all,” said Mr. Stephens.
