AP Art History Summer Assignment

Dear Art History Student,

You have chosen to take on the challenge of AP Art History!  I can’t wait for our journey to begin next semester.  We will travel the world learning about different times and cultures through their art.  Before we begin our journey together, I would like for you to take a trip on your own.  Your assignment over the summer is to visit the art museum of your choice and document your experience.

I am not listing the many museums in New York City or Boston.  Information is easy to find about those two cities.  The list above is in no way comprehensive.  Wherever you visit this summer – Birmingham, AL or London – there are many art museums to explore.

Ideas to document your experience:

·        Take your sketchbook along and do several drawings of works of art, the building, and/or other patrons.  (Be sure to ask permission to bring a pencil into any museum)

·        Take your journal along and write about your impressions – what you liked, didn’t like, and why.  (Be sure to ask permission to bring a pen/pencil into any museum)

·        Take a camera or video camera along and take pictures and footage of your experiences.  (Be sure to ask about any restrictions on the use of these items)

I hope you have a wonderful summer and you enjoy your trip to a museum.
