Career Technology Department

Fall Semester 2006

Introduction to Teaching is an exploratory course designed to pique students’ interests about education as a career.  In this course, students will be exposed to the many facets of education through current educational readings, class discussion, guest speakers, discovery learning projects, classroom observations, an participatory extended field experiences with a master teacher at a local elementary school.

GRADING CATEGORIES:         Class Activities/Writings                        35%

                                                      Field Experience                                    30%

                                                      Test/Projects/Final Exam                       20%

                                                      Observations                                         15%

 Class Activities/Writings:

Includes daily individual or group activities, teacher directed activities, videos, games, and student participation.  Writing assignments will include specific article reviews from current readings and journal assignments.  Communication skills are extremely important in the teaching profession; therefore, all writing assignments must meet the following requirements:  correct grammar, correct syntax, accurate spelling, good vocabulary usage and appropriate presentation (written or oral).

Note:  All late assignments will be subject to a penalty after the due date.

 Tests/Projects/Final Exam:

All projects will consist of explicit instructions and evaluation procedures.  You will have a minimum of 2 major projects throughout the semester and the final exam will conclude the course.

 Observations:

Observations will be structured and based on specific objectives.  Students will collect data on the environment, teacher, and students to make conclusions and inferences.

 Field Experience:

Students will be assigned to a master teacher in a local elementary school to become a part of the regular classroom environment as a teacher apprenticeship after 4-6 weeks in class learning.  As documentation of skills and field teaching experience, a major focus will be to develop a portfolio by the conclusion of the field experience.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS PROGRAM: Every Wednesday students are encouraged to participate in a “Dress for Success” program designed to develop their professional image. The optional attire on Wednesday will be business casual or professional business wear.  Each Career Technical teacher will acknowledge students on this special day each week.

VIDEOS:         Educational, Biographies, Movie Clips

We may occasionally view other curriculum-related movies or movie clips, none of which will exceed a PG-13 rating. We frequently view educational videos that correlate with the topic of learning. Your signature on this syllabus indicates permission for your student to view these movies.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Must have a 3-ring binder for a portfolio set-up of all work assignments.

 ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP POLICY:

A student who is present and actively participates is more likely to be successful; however, if a student is absent, he/she is responsible for locating their make-up work in the designated folder and turn the assignment.  All excused absences must have test, class work and homework must be completed by the 5th day after the absence. If a teacher apprentice is consistently absent from his/her assigned school, it may become necessary to have the student assigned to work at Kell High with the Special Education Department.

 LATE WORK POLICY:

Work deadline dates are given on most work assignments.  All class work, homework, and projects must be turned in on time and/or by the due date. Any class work, homework or projects that must be late should have the teacher approval first before submitting any late work.

 HOMEWORK:

All homework is due at the beginning of the class period regardless.  The teacher does not have to ask for the homework.  The homework assignment should be placed in the designated homework basket.

 TARDY POLICY:

To avoid being counted tardy, students must be seated and ready for class when the bell rings.  If a student arrives tardy he/she must sign-in on the clipboard located on the teacher desk and proceed to their assigned seat. Telephone calls home will occur after the 5th tardy and in accordance with the school policy. Unacceptable behavior will result in detention. If a teacher apprentice is consistently tardy arriving to his/her assigned school, it may become necessary to have the student assigned to work at Kell High with the Special Education Department.

CELLPHONES, CD PLAYERS, AND COMPUTER LAB USE (PLEASE READ)

Students should adhere to the cell phone policy established by the school.  CD players are not to be in use by a student anytime the teacher is lecturing, giving directions or leading the class.  All computers in the lab will remain off until instructed by the teacher to be turned on.  No Internet games are allowed.  Failure to comply with the computer use class policy will result in the following penalties:

LOST OF COMPUTER PRIVILEGES and all assignments must be handwritten.

1st Offense – 2 weeks

2nd  Offense – 4 weeks

3rd Offense – Remainder of Semester

 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Cheating is considered a serious matter.  The parents of a student who has been involved in cheating will be notified and the student will receive a grade of zero for the test or evaluation period, and a grade of U in conduct.

GRADUATION CORDS ARE AWARDED TO TAP STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED A MINIMUM OF TWO COMPLETE YEARS (4 SEMESTERS).
