Georgia Animal Alphabet Book Project

Research Process
The Big 6™

Student Directions

Scenario

Your group has been selected to write a children's alphabet book about animals native to Georgia.  You will preview examples of alphabet books, select a format, research the animals, and write and illustrate a book.  Good luck!

#1 Task Definition

What needs to be done?

The Task
You will locate animals that are native to Georgia for each letter of the alphabet.  Planned research activities will help you to locate information about your animals.  You will use the information to complete a book page for each letter.  Using these pages, your group will then create a book that compiles all of the animals into one picture book.

The Product
You will create an alphabet book version of Georgia animals.  The final project can be in the form of an electronic book or a printed book.

#2 Information Seeking Strategies

What resources can I use?

Your first activity is to select the format you want to use for your finished product.
  • Look at the examples of the alphabet books that are located in the media center.
  • Each group member should select their favorite book plus a second choice.  Be prepared to explain what you like about the book and why it would be a good choice for an animal alphabet book.
  • As a group, vote for the book format that you would like to use for the project.

#3 Location and Access

Where can I find these resources?

Your next step is to locate an animal native to Georgia for each letter of the alphabet.  Use the Georgia Animal Alphabet Book Project handout to list your finds!  Each group member will create their own list.

Use the following resources to locate the animals:
Cobb Virtual Library - World Book Online: Explore Georgia, Grolier Online: America the Beautiful, GALILEO: Britannica Elementary
     Georgia Wildlife Federation

       Georgia Wildlife Web
Georgia books located on the reserved bookshelf.
