Georgia Map Project

Research Process
The Big 6™

Student Directions

Scenario

Your group has been selected to draw maps of Georgia picturing different historical times.  You will preview examples of maps, select a time period, learn about map elements, and design a map.  Good luck!

#1 Task Definition

What needs to be done?

The Task
You will locate maps of Georgia for examples.  Planned research activities will help you determine what features should be included in your map.  Your group will determine the method to create your map - drawing on a poster board or tag board, or using KidPix to electronically create a map.  Using the information you collected, your group will then create a map that depicts Georgia, Cobb County, or Powder Springs.

The Product
You will create a map.  The final project can be in the form of an electronic map or a hand-drawn map.

#2 Information Seeking Strategies

What resources can I use?

Your first activity is to select the map that you want to work on in small group.  Your group has already decided to create a Cherokee Nation map, an historical Georgia map, and a map of current Powder Springs.
  • Look at the examples of map in books that are located in the media center.
  • Each group member should select their favorite map to work on plus a second choice.
  • As a group, we will evenly divide the members into 3 map teams.

Next, we will discuss the necessary elements of a map and use atlases to locate examples of these elements.  The elements can be remembered by using the acronym TODALSIGS:
     T = Title
     O = Orientation (compass rose)
     D = Date
     A = Author
     L = Legend (key)
     S = Scale
     I = Index (alphabetic listing of places)
     G = Grid
     S - Source (where did the map come from)
Which of these elements will be necessary for your small group's map?

#3 Location and Access

Where can I find these resources?

Your next step is to locate information needed to create your small group's map.

Use the following resources to locate maps:
     Cobb Virtual Library - World Book Online: Explore Georgia, Grolier Online: America the Beautiful, GALILEO: Britannica Elementary
     Historical Maps of Georgia

     Powder Springs - Wikipedia
      Atlases in the Reference section
      Georgia books located on the reserved bookshelf.

List items that should be included on your map.  Don't forget TODALSINGS!
