Student Directions

Scenario

Your group has been selected to write and publish a Cherokee newspaper.  You will preview examples of newspapers, select the pages to include in your newspaper, complete research, and write and publish a newspaper.  Good luck!

#1 Task Definition

What needs to be done?

The Task
You will select the sections of a newspaper that will be included in your Cherokee newspaper.  Each group member will select a section that they will serve as editor.  Planned research activities will help you to locate information about your section.  You will use the information to complete articles to publish.  Using these articles, your group will then create a newspaper.

The Product
You will create a Cherokee newspaper.  The final project can be in the form of a printed newspaper.

#2 Information Seeking Strategies

What resources can I use?

Your first activity is to select the sections to include in your newspaper.
  • Examine the newspapers available in the media center.
  • Brainstorm ideas for sections that could be included in a Cherokee newspaper.
  • As a group, vote for the seven sections you would like to include in the project.
  • Determine the section editor for each one.  Section editors will be in charge of their individual section, but may have help from others in writing articles.  The section editor will determine the final layout and complete the final proofreading of his/her section before publication.

#3 Location and Access

Where can I find these resources?

Your next step is to locate information to use as background in writing the newspaper articles.  Use the Article Organizer handout to organize your information!

Use the following resources to locate the information:
Cobb Virtual Library - World Book Online: Explore Georgia, Grolier Online: America the Beautiful, GALILEO: Britannica Elementary
     History of the Cherokee

       Cherokees in North Georgia
Georgia and Cherokee books located on the reserved bookshelf.

#4 Use of Information

What can I use from these resources?

Now you are ready to use your information to write your articles!
  • Select one article from a current newspaper that is located in your section.  Read it carefully to become familiar with the writing style of a newspaper reporter.
  • Create an outline from your Article Organizer.  Write your article.
  • Ask another section editor to proofread and make any needed changes.
  • Use the above steps to write other articles for your newspaper section.
