Comprehension Questions

These are questions for you to ask your child as he/she is reading or as you are reading to your child. It is important to ask questions to ensure higher-level thinking and comprehension from your child. THANK YOU!

Before Reading:

1.      Preview and Predict: Look at the pictures and tell me what you think will happen in the story?

2.    Why do you think that will happen?

 

During Reading:

1.      What has happened in the story so far?

2.    How do the characters feel right now? Why do the characters feel that way?

 

After Reading:

1.      What happened at the beginning of the story? Middle? End?

2.    Who were the characters?

3.    What was the setting?

4.    Was there a problem in the story? If so, what was the solution?

5.    Tell me the most important things that happened in the story (main idea)? Why were they so important?

6.    Tell me what you liked about this story? Why was that your favorite part?

7.    What does this story make you think of? What kind of connection did you make (text-to-self or text-to-text)?
