Accelerated Reader Guidelines

Mrs. Danielson’s Class

The goals of this program are:

1.     Motivate

2.     Individualize reading practice

3.     Encourage self-directed learning

Your child received a red folder with his/her Accelerated Reader Log attached.

In this log, are your child’s current reading level, and their point goal for the month.

In order to meet this goal your child should be reading daily and taking on the average of 4-6 books per week, depending on the point value assigned to the book.  Assigned book values range from .05 to 15.00 depending on the type of book and level.  You can find the list of Accelerated Reader books by level on the Kemp web page.

  1. Your child may read a few levels above their indicated reading level, but unless directed by me should not be reading below their level.
  2. Your child is to read the book, practice retelling the story to make sure they can identify the setting, characters, main events, problems, and solutions.
  3. Your child will have the opportunity to take an Accelerated Reader test on the computer every morning before school begins, again during literacy centers, and anytime during the day that they have an extra few minutes because they have completed an in class assignment.
  4. As soon as they take the test, they will have the opportunity to return the book to the media center sometime that day to get a new book.
  5. A report of your child’s reading activity for AR will be made each week and will come home in their Red Folder. This report will show:
    1. The number of tests taken during the week
    2. The percentage of questions answered correctly

If your child has taken at least four tests and has a 90% or higher average, then their reading level will be raised.  Reading levels may be lowered if a child is not succeeding on their current level for four tests in a row.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOUR CHILD HAVE THEIR MEDIA CENTER BOOK AT SCHOOL EVERY DAY.  WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED READING THEM AT HOME, PLEASE HELP BUILD THE HABIT OF PLACING THEM BACK IN THEIR BOOK BAG!!

                           Happy Reading!
