Nebraska

Here we are standing in front of a soy bean field.

Dear Nicholson Stars,

Katie (2nd grade) and Maggie (4th grade) took me on a trip to Nebraska in August right before school started to attend a family wedding. Farming is a way of life for people living in Nebraska. In fact, more than half of the population makes a living from agriculture, which involves both producing crops and raising livestock. Corn and soybeans are two big crops, and cattle and hog ranching are very common.

Here we are standing in front of a corn field.

Although farming has existed in Nebraska since the territory was settled in the mid-1800s, that way of life has greatly increased since World War 11 in the 1940s. It's interesting that the size of farms has increased dramatically (They are really big in this state!), yet the number of farms themselves has decreased. Did you know that the capital of Nebraska is Lincoln?

I'll write again soon.

Sincerely,

Star Buddy
