Calculating HOPE Eligibility
All classes listed in the following subject areas of your transcript (including academic
electives such as anatomy and psychology) are now counted in HOPE GPA:
English
Math
Science
Social Studies
Foreign Language
Quality Points are assigned using the following formula:
| Regular |
Honors |
AP |
| A = 4 |
A = 4 |
A = 4* |
| B = 3 |
B = 3 |
B = 3.5 |
| C = 2 |
C = 2 |
C = 2.5 |
| D = 1 |
D = 1 |
D = 1.5 |
| F = 0 |
F = 0 |
F = 0 |
*since no GPA can be more than 4.0, an “A” in an AP or IB class can not receive any extra quality points
These Quality Points are calculated based on each ½ credit you earn. Since Osborne is
on a 4X4 Block Schedule, but also offers various classes that award ½ (0.5) credits, it is
important that you assign the appropriate number of Quality Points to each grade.
If a class earned 1.0 credit, you will count it twice in the calculation. If a class earned 0.5
credit, you will count it once in the calculation.
Here is an example:
| Class |
Grade |
Credit |
Quality Points |
| English Lit/Comp |
94 |
1.0 |
4+4 |
| Algebra II |
89 |
1.0 |
3+3 |
| Government |
94 |
0.5 |
4 |
| Economics |
92 |
0.5 |
4 |
| Spanish III |
95 |
1.0 |
4+4 |
You determine your GPA by adding the quality Points (4+4+3+3+4+4+4+4) and figure
the average. (4+4+3+3+4+4+4+4 divided by 8 = 3.75)
