TOPIC ACTION/EXPECTATION

Media Center Orientation for 9th Graders

  • Orientation for 9th graders will begin the week of August 27. All English teachers teaching 9th graders should sign-up for a time to bring their entire class to the media center.

  • Orientation will also be given 2nd semester for 9th grade English classes.

  • If you are not a 9th grade English teacher, but would like to bring your class for orientation, please see the media specialists.

Scheduling the
Media Center

  • The media center calendar is located in the media specialists' office. Please see one of us to schedule your class.

  • Fill out the Cooperative Planning Form and return it to the media specialists as soon as possible. We will provide orientation to your students as requested on this form.

  • Teachers are encouraged to send students to the media center on an "as needed" basis; students must bring a pass when visiting the media center! Teachers may send up to 5 students to the media center without a teacher. Please do not send students during their lunch; they need to pick up a lunch pass from the media center before school or in between classes. Please use the yellow hall pass (or ask us to send you a master media pass form) when sending students during your class.

  • Students are encouraged to use the media center in the mornings, but they need a hall pass.

Media Center Automation System - Destiny

  • Destiny is an internet-based automation system that can eventually allow students and staff to perform searches from anywhere there is an internet connection!

  • You can easily locate a favorite book, works by an author, or non-fiction titles and AV to support your curriculum and see if that item is available.  The search screen for Destiny is pictured below:

Cobb Virtual Library (CVL)

  • Click on the link to access the new Cobb Virtual Library. Read the information at the bottom of the screen.

  • Click on the High link. Review the 9 resources available for high school use. List the resources on your Progress Form on which you would like more training! Introductory or refresher sessions will be scheduled in the fall as needed.

  • These resources are available for high school students and staff only. They can all be accessed from school or from home. A password is needed for home use.

  • Click on the Password link at the bottom of the page. Print out a copy of this for your personal use if desired. Remember that the password should not be published in school newsletters or on web pages! You can make copies to send home with students as needed.

  • The Cobb Virtual Library is the first place our students should be directed to when searching for information. Google searches and Ask Jeeves are not good choices for high school students!

  • Plan to complete this task by September 21st!

GPB Video Streaming Information

  • Review the handout "How to Set-Up Your Individual Account for GPB/Discovery Education Unitedstreaming" provided in the Virtual Orientation Packet.

  • All Cobb teachers will need this information about setting up their own individual teacher account. (If you created an account last year and were here at Pebblebrook, you do not need to do this again.

  • Follow the directions on the flyer to set up your own video streaming account. Record your new username and password for your future use.

  • As a teacher resource the passcode information is to be used only by teachers (not to be distributed to students or parents).

  • Using your new user name and password, login to the GPB site. Use the search screen on the left to locate a video resource that is appropriate for your students. List the title in the Notes/Follow Up section of your Progress Form.

  • In the same section of the Progress Form, also indicate if you need introductory or refresher video streaming training/information. These session will be scheduled in the Fall as needed!

  • Plan to complete this task by September 21st!

  • The Pebblebrook Virtual Library web page has a section devoted to you – the classroom teacher! You can access this page by opening the icon labeled  "Internet Resource" in your application launcher. You can also access this link from home by going to the school web site and clicking on Virtual Library (passwords are embedded on the page in the application launcher). Passwords for use at home can be obtained by clicking on the password link here at school and taking a copy home; they are also available in the media center. Click on the PVL and scroll down to begin your exploration.

  • The web page is designed to help you with a one-page bookmark for all your needed resources from planning your lessons to keeping up with staff development and reporting absences. Let me know if you have other sites you would like to see added!

  • Media Production Room: Ellison die cuts, paper cutter, bulletin board paper, opaque projector, and work tables.

  • Students Loans: Students may check out regular materials for 3 weeks; other items are available overnight: reference materials and audiovisuals. They must have teacher approval and a $3.00 refundable deposit in order to check out audiovisuals. Fines for students are 5¢ a day for regular materials and 25¢ a day for overnight materials.

  • Faculty Loans: There is no limit to the items faculty may check out, nor are fines accrued. We do expect payment for lost materials. Please allow students to be responsible for checking out and returning their own materials.

  • Satellite/Cable/Closed Circuit TV: The channel listing can be posted in your room. If you would like a satellite program taped, please give us complete information. Copyright guidelines need to be followed.

  • Equipment: Sign up to use a camcorder, Beyond Question, or other special equipment with the media specialists.

Network Services

  • Network Logins for Staff: Login with your employee badge number and the extension .stf. (abc12345.stf.). Your password must be at least 8 characters. You will be prompted to change your password every 45 days; add a number after your password (it must be different). After 6-8 times you can probably revert back to your original. (password / password1 / password2)
  • GroupWise Logins for Staff: Access through the icon on the desktop at school or through WebAcess from home. Name standard: First.Last@cobbk12.org. If you forget your password or need it changed, contact the media specialists. There are distribution lists set up for Pebblebrook; in the address book, type in DL-PEB- to see all the lists available. You can add personal addresses under your personal tab in the address book. There are tutorials available for the email and calendar features of GroupWise from Atomic Learning (provided in the Virtual Orientation Packet). If you want to save email, you must set up an archive. The county has limits on your mailbox, so make sure and clear all large files or attachments periodically.
  • I-Cue Logins: Contact Rena Glaze or Remedy for problems with I-Cue logins.
  • Home Directory: Each person with a network account, students and staff, has an area of the H drive available to save personal files. To save documents, staff can save to the C: drive if it is your computer, but it is actually better to save to your home directory (H:). Select "File," then "Save as." You may need to click on the drop down menu to find your badge or ID number.

Remedy Work Orders

  • If you are experiencing problems with your teacher laptop or any other computer, please submit a work order by e-mail or by calling 770-426-3330. You may also login to the Remedy system.

  • Other problems with your network and GroupWise logins, passwords, or AV equipment can be reported to the media staff.

  • An e-mail sent to Kathy, Susan, and/or Heidi stating the problem is the preferred method of reporting. You can also leave a note with your name and problem. This allows us to have a written record, not just a memory record!

  • We may ask you to do a couple of quick fixes or try to troubleshoot the problem before placing a work order.  \Most problems can be remedied quickly, so make sure you remind us if the problem is not fixed in a couple of days!

Ask AL
Atomic Learning

  • The county has a subscription to Atomic Learning which gives us access to tutorials for software training and curriculum tools for integrating technology into the curriculum. Please see the handout in your packet and take a look at this valuable resource.
