Alonza E. Cruse, District Director
United States Food and Drug Administration
19701 Fairchild
Irvine, CA  92612

Dear Ms. Cruse,

I am a parent of a high school student attending Pope High School in Marietta, GA.  Recently, an article was published in the PTSA’s weekly online newsletter, Hound Highlights, describing an outrageous product on the market available to our youth called ‘BLOW’ (www.iloveblow.com).  In this article, the product was described as a white caffeine powder sold in vials along with a toy credit card and mirror.  My understanding of this product is that it is an energy drink mix to be added to a beverage for an extra boost of energy.

As a concerned parent trying to keep my child drug-free, I am outraged that the FDA has allowed a product on the market that has blatant connotations of cocaine usage, specifically targeting our youth for purchase. This product is being advertised on the MySpace.com website, potentially encouraging and glamorizing cocaine use.  I do NOT find this company’s marketing approach cute, clever, or at all acceptable.  More importantly, potential health risks are also associated with the use of this product, including fluctuating blood pressure and heart problems.

With sincere concern for my child’s well being, as well as our nation’s youth, I am asking the FDA to do whatever is necessary to REMOVE  ‘BLOW’ from the market, or at the very least, require that this company change it’s marketing name and strategy.  Products such as this should NEVER be allowed to enter the marketplace and target our very impressionable children.

I truly appreciate your time in hearing my concerns about ‘BLOW’ and look forward to a reply from you as to what action the FDA plans to take to REMOVE  ‘BLOW’ from the marketplace.

Sincerely,
xxxxxxxxxx

Hound Highlights - the Pope PTSA Weekly E-Newsletter
The PTSA, faculty and administration collaborate on a weekly newsletter, “Hound Highlights”, which briefly describe upcoming events at Pope, and send it via electronic mail to our parents and community stakeholders. This E-newsletter has proven to be the best way to stay informed of all the various events at Pope during the school year. We try to send an issue every Friday with updated information from the principal, PPO, Guidance, PTSA, student clubs and booster organizations, as well as athletic events for the upcoming two weeks.

To receive your copy of “Hound Highlights” you can either provide your email address on the PTSA membership form, or send an email to popeptsa@bellsouth.net . Please provide your student(s)’ name and graduating year in the message section and “New HH Subscriber” in the subject line. We do not disclose your address nor use it for any other reason except for “Hound Highlights” or class-specific communications (ex. Freshmen Parents night.)
