Continue to save and send in burned out light bulbs,

flat cereal boxes, oatmeal boxes (with lid) and magazines.

We use these things in the art room!

We cover lots of standards and skills throughout the year.  Please ask your students what they are learning each week in art.

5th grade is currently working on clay rattles.  This is one of two clay projects they will be working on this year.  We will soon start wire sculpture.  In May we will be working on colorful tiles which will be installed in the art room as a tribute to this group of 5th graders to leave behind at Sedalia Park.

4th grade just finished working on Mary Cassatt.  They painted a portrait of their mom and child.  We will soon begin color mixing and exploring intermediate colors.  The next artist we will be exploring is Faith Ringgold.

3rd grade just completed their Van Gogh project.  They are currently working on landscapes and studying how color choice affects the mood of a painting.

2nd grade is currently working with Chinese brush painting techniques.  Over the next two months they will explore, develop, and experiment with  3D sculptures, fiber arts, clay, and papier-mâché.  Art theory will include horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines; radial balance; movement and rhythm; and tints and shades of color.  Abstract art will also be studied.

1st grade is creating journals.  They have completed the pages and are designing a copper relief cover.  Future projects include exploring and creating textured works of art, printing, paper sculpture, and a class mural.  Art theory will include positive/negative space, geometric shapes, and color mixing.  They will also be reviewing Impressionist artists.

Kindergarten has just finished working with clay.  Printing, 3-D design and color blending will be some of the next projects.  Art theory will include pattern, texture, line identification and color blending.  Modern art will also be explored.

Our PTA will be hosting ART day in May.  Look for more information in the Spring about this exciting event!  There will be artists, both visual and performing throughout the building all day long.  Students will have the opportunity to watch and participate with a variety of artists. They will also be creating a Tshirt that will be used on field day.  This day is one that your child will never forget.  It is also a day that requires a lot of volunteers to make it successful so please sign up for a time to help-it is a great day to get your volunteer hours completed!

Sedalia Park is fortunate to have two art specialists.

Lisa Casey teaches 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.  Ms. Casey graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in Visual Arts, a B.S. in Art Education from Kennesaw State University, and a Master's degree in Art Education from Georgia State University.  She also received National Board Certification in November of 2004.  Ms. Casey begins her 12th year as an art teacher this year, 6 of which she taught in Clayton County.  Ms. Casey is married and has a son who attends Sedalia Park and a daughter who is three.

Arlene Barnes is teaching Kdg., 1st and 2nd grades,  She is an experienced art teacher and professional artist.  After earning her degree from Hunter College in New York, she taught art at the High School level for many years before moving into professional advertising and marketing.  As an artist, she has practiced in all media forms including painting, pottery, and stained glass; her artwork has been exhibited in national art shows.  Arlene is now returning to teaching.  She especially enjoys her new experience teaching at the elementary level where her challenge is making art exciting, broadening and fun for her students.

Ms. Barnes is married and has three children.

The Art Program here at Sedalia Park approaches art through a  Disciplined Based Art Education program for kindergarten through 5th grade.  This includes art history, criticism, aesthetics, and studio based art projects.

We have many resources including games, prints, textbooks and videos to engage children on meaningful art instruction.  We study art and artists from many different cultural backgrounds. The children are offered several fun yet educational styles of learning about the world of art.

The art program at Sedalia Park is enhanced by PTA's Multicultural Art Day.  This is held annually and will be in May this year.  The entire day is devoted to the Arts and celebrates a variety of cultures.  The children experience various artists from many different art fields, such stained glass, cake decorating, pottery, weaving, wood carving, story telling and much more. We have parents from other countries bring artifacts and speak to the children about their countries customs. The children look forward to this event every year

At the column to the left, we have a list of art museums with direct links.  You may explore these with your children by double clicking on the museum. This would be a wonderful way for your family to enhance your child's art education together.  There are local art schools listed which hold camps during breaks and in the summer. We have also listed some wonderful children's books that the children love to listen too and look at the artwork.
