Planning For Your Future

Select what year you're in: 9th 10th 11th 12th

9th Grade - top
August
Attend 9th Grade orientation.  Build strong academic skills by taking classes that challenge you.
September
Study nightly and stay focused.  Attend the 9th grade parent night. 
October
Make an appointment to meet your counselor.  Get involved in a couple of activities.
November
See your counselor again and visit the career center.  Work with GCIS.
December
Study hard for your final exams.  Don't wait for the last minute.
January
Review your schedule and make sure you are taking classes that challenge you.
February
Attend 9th Grade advisement with your parents.  Create a 4-year plan of study and review your ACT Explore scores.
March
Begin your preparation for the End of Course Tests.  Start organizing your study material.
April
Pick your academic and elective classes for the next year.  Make sure you complete your registration forms correctly!
May
Study hard for your final exams and for End of Course Tests.  Keep a copy of your report cards, registration forms,  and transcript.
June
Secure a summer job, and/or sign up with a volunteer organization or program.  You may also consider summer academic camps.
July
Start a portfolio of your high school activities -- Keep a list that details your activities both in and out of school.  Start an "Activities and Awards" file.  

 

10th Grade - top
August
Concentrate hard on getting yourself organized.  Make sure that you maintain a balance between your activities and classes. 
September
Participate in clubs/organizations and get involved in community activities.  Prepare for the PSAT.
October
All sophomores take the PSAT.
November
Go during your lunch period to the career center and look very carefully at GCIS.  Familiarize yourself with the different sections of the program.
December
Study hard for your final exams.  Don't wait for the last minute!  Also, review your PSAT scores.
January
Go over your PSAT results very carefully.  You will get a list of suggestions for improving your scores.
February
Consider whether or not you should take the SAT Prep course during second semester of your junior year.  
March
Explore all of your options after high school.  Now is the time to find out about everything that is available to a high school graduate.
April
Check out the possibility of attending a summer academic program or camp, and make sure you complete your registration forms properly.
May
Study hard for final exams and End of Course Tests.  Keep a copy of your updated transcript.
June
Secure a summer job and/or sign up for a volunteer program in your community.  
July
Update your student portfolio.  Visit careercruising.com and set up your student portfolio.  Update your "Activities and Awards" file.

Any 11th grade student who wishes to take the PSAT exam may see Ms. Stoddard in the 11th grade office to register for the test. The cost for the exam is $12.00 payable via cash or money order. No personal checks will be accepted. Only those students who pre-register will be allowed to take the exam. The last day for test registration will be October 6, 2006.

11th Grade - top
August
Meet with your counselor to go over your schedule and graduation requirements.  Make sure that you are taking classes that challenge you. 
September
Visit the Career Center and identify sources for college/tech school info.  Review the PSAT bulletin.
October
Take the PSAT if you are a college-bound student, or take the ASVAB.  Attend PROBE Fair.  Take Graduation Writing Test.  Begin researching colleges and schools.
November
Attend Junior Advisement with your parent or guardian, and attend South Cobb's College Fair.  Also, go to Kennesaw State's PSO information night if you are interested in the PSO program.
December
Research schools that interest you.  Request a catalog and viewbook.  Also find out when the schools are hosting visitation days.  Review the test schedule for SAT and ACT.
January
If you are interested in attending a military academy, you must begin your application now.   Take the SAT/ACT if you are considering PSO.
February
If you have completed the proper college prep classes, sign up to take the SAT and ACT.  Attend local colleges fairs, such as QUEST.  Begin a list of schools/training programs in which you are interested.
March
Take the subject tests of the Georgia High School Graduation Test.  Register for ACT and SAT.  Use GCIS to research possible sources of financial aid.
April
Research summer jobs or programs.  Also, register for classes -- make sure you fill out the registration forms properly.  Check out:  www.fastweb.com
May
Secure an internship, summer job, or volunteer position in a career, industry, or field of study that interests you.  Keep an updated copy of your transcript.  Mail NCAA forms if appropriate.
June
Take the SAT and ACT if you didn't in May.  Create a final list of schools in which you are interested.  Choose your "dream school" and at least 2 others as a back-up plan.  Request applications from each school.
July
Update your "Activities and Awards" file.  Use the file to compile your student resume.

 

12th Grade - top
August
Make sure you check your senior newsletter, The Senior Scoop.  Meet with your counselor to go over your senior status report .  Finalize your student resume, and talk to your teachers and counselors about letters of recommendation.
September
Attend senior parent night.  Sign up to retake the SAT and ACT (or take the tests for the first time).  Watch The Senior Scoop for information about scholarships.
October
Attend PROBE Fair.  Apply early to the schools of your choice.  Do not wait for the deadline!  Meet with your counselor if you have questions. Keep checking out scholarships.
November

Visit: http://www.studentaid.ed.gov and sign up for a password.

"Show Me the Money" 

December
Make sure you study hard and do well on your finals.  Get all of your information ready so that you can fill out your FAFSA forms quickly.
January

Fill out your FAFSA online at:  www.fafsa.ed.gov 

February
Send your transcript with first semester grades to the colleges to which you have applied.
March

Stay focused and keep your grades up!

April
Check to make sure all of your forms and documents are filed with the college of your choice.
May
Request that your final transcript be sent to the appropriate schools and training programs.

Take AP Exams if appropriate.

June

GRADUATE!!
