The High
School/High Tech (HS/HT) program is designed to encourage and empower high
school students who have a disability to enter into challenging high tech
careers through educational enrichment and employment opportunities.
WHO IS
ELIGIBLE?
YOU ARE if you –
- are
enrolled in a Cobb County or Marietta City high school;
- have an
identified disability – sensory, medical, orthopedic, or learning;
- are
intending to pursue education and training beyond high school;
- display
an aptitude for and interest in technology, engineering, science, or math.
WHAT
OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE?
Students will have the
opportunity to participate in a variety of in-school and out-of-school programs
and activities designed to explore career options in computing, science,
engineering, and other high-tech fields. Activities include workshops, corporate
site visits, mentoring, job shadowing, field trips, projects, competitions,
summer internships and employment. Students may also be eligible for assistance
with postsecondary education and referral to other programs and agencies. Past
groups have visited the Marshall Space Flight Center, the Tennessee Aquarium,
Southern Polytechnic State University, Kennesaw State University, IBM corporate
headquarters, SunTrust Bank, and other places of interest.
HOW DO I
SIGN UP?
Complete the HS/HT Student
Interest Form and have your teacher complete the Teacher Referral Form.
Your teacher will forward this information to the Cobb County High School/High
Tech Council. Once the Council receives your form, you will be contacted to set
up a meeting with you, your parents, and a local WIA/Youth Council
representative to complete the application process
WHAT IS THE
HIGH SCHOOL/HIGH TECH COUNCIL?
HS/HT Council membership
includes representatives from the local school systems, the Department of Labor,
the Workforce Investment Board, Rehabilitation Services, institutions of higher
education, businesses, and parents. The Council oversees and coordinates the
activities of the program. This year, the Council has arranged a field trip to
Huntsville Space Center and the Tennessee Aquarium, coordinated student
participation in National Disability Mentoring Day, created a promotional video,
offered training in website development, and coordinated internships with UPS,
Davidson & Co., and ADP. Anyone interested in serving on the Council is welcome
to attend any regular Council meeting. Contact any of these Council members for
