Still
Elementary is a K-5 school located in West Cobb County.
In 2002, Still celebrated twenty-five years of learning
and has undergone many changes during its history. The
changes have been the results of being located in
rapidly growing area of the school district. Still
remains a neighborhood school that benefits from strong
parental involvement and community support. A twenty-one
classroom addition to be completed in 2007-08 will
accommodate expected growth in student enrollment in the
west Cobb area.
Still
Elementary is named for Mrs. Viola Walden Still, a life
long resident of western Cobb County and an educator for
45 years. Mrs. Still's attitude toward the teaching
profession is best exemplified by her own words:
"If I had my
life to live over, I would teach school. There is no
profession more challenging, more important, or more
enjoyable than helping mold the character and thinking
of our future leaders."
Ancestors of
Mrs. Viola Walden Still were among the first settlers in
Cobb County. Viola Walden was born here in 1895. Miss
Walden graduated in 1913 as an honor student in the
first graduating class of the Seventh District A&M (now
McEachern High School). She was awarded a full
scholarship to college but was not allowed to attend at
that time. During her years of teaching, she attended
afternoon and evening classes and summer sessions to
obtain her college diploma. At the age of 60, she
received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Oglethorpe
University.
The
Cobb County Board of Education voted unanimously to name
the new West Cobb Elementary School on Casteel Road in
memory of Mrs. Viola Walden Still. Still Elementary was
built in 1979 at a cost of approximately $1.5 million.
In the fall of that year, it began operation as an
18-classroom school. Mr. Charles Sprayberry was
principal. There were 444 students and 23 staff members.
Several new
elementary schools have been built over the years to
relieve overcrowding at Still Elementary. The community
has also grown in diversity as new residential and
business development continues in the area. A large
upscale shopping area and ranch condominiums recently
opened in the community. Hillgrove High School and
Lovinggood Middle School recently opened down the street
from Still to accommodate student enrollment growth in
our attendance zone. |
