Projects

Projects are to be designed and created by students. Some adult guidance is allowed, but it must be clear that work entered by students was done by the students.

Here are some things you will want to know about projects:

  1. Students may only enter one project.

  2. Students unable to present their projects, even due to illness, may NOT use "proxies" unless they are part of the original, registered team representing a project.

  3. All projects are required to have a notebook that documents how the project was created and contain hard copies of the final project. The notebook requirements are listed below.

  4. Students will select a category in which they will compete. Students may not "switch" competition categories the day of the fair unless a judge has determined that the project was entered incorrectly. The Fair Director will resolve any questions regarding appropriateness of categories.

Notebook Requirements:

  • Title page (Name of project, Name of creator(s), Competition category & level)

  • Introductory Page (Introductory Narrative, Lists of Hardware & Software)
This should be written in the student’s voice. The Introductory Narrative should include the reason for the project creation, a statement of knowledge gained from the creation of the project, and the value of the project for its creator.

  • Instructions Page(s)
The instructions page(s) must include a description of how the project was created and be written in the student’s voice. The instructions may include step-by-step directions which would allow someone to replicate the project.

  • Project Samples
The notebook must include a hard copy of the project where appropriate. For example, PowerPoint slides, web pages or programming source code could be included.  No tri-boards or large displays as space is limited.

  • Bibliography
If the student submits a research type project, a bibliography of sources must be included.

  • Copyright Permissions
The state technology fair committee supports ethical behavior and respect for the work of others.  Therefore any images, text, or recordings not uniquely created by the contestant must have written permission from the owner of the work before it can be used.  Work that is uniquely that of the contestant or that is royalty free or in the public domain must have a statement to that effect.  Work that is not properly cited will be severely penalized in the judging.

Students must bring the completed notebook to the technology fair.  We do not have the ability to print any contents of notebooks the day of the fair.
