HOW TO TYPE A TIGER PUBLISHING STORY
Tiger Publishing uses a special Microsoft Word template to make sure that, when the final copy of a story is printed, it’s in the proper format for binding. Typing a story into the template is easy. This document tells you how.
If you don’t have a computer, can’t open the template, or just feel out of your depth . . . don’t panic. Your class’s Tiger Publishing Coordinator can arrange for a volunteer to type your child’s story into the template.
If you have any questions, problems, or concerns, feel free to contact them or send an email to

1. Click here to download the template.
2. Save the template to your computer. Give it a distinctive name, preferably based on the title or the author’s name (example: Zelda_Pafufnik.doc).
3. Using the mouse or arrow keys, position the cursor before the prompt word "Title" and begin typing the child's book title. When finished, carefully erase the prompt word “Title.”
Note: Do not use the <Tab> or <Return> or <Enter> keys while entering your text.
Note: Erase only the prompt word, not the space(s) after or below it.
4. Following the same steps as in #3, type the child’s name in place of the prompt word “Author.”
5. Following the same steps as in #3, type the child’s book dedication in place of the prompt word “Dedication.”
Note: If there is no dedication, skip this step and leave the prompt word “Dedication” alone. The blank dedication page will be discarded before binding.
6. Following the same steps as in #3, replace the prompt words “First Text Page” with the first paragraph of the child’s story. When you’ve finished the first paragraph:
To Add Another Paragraph to the Same Page, hit <Return> or <Enter> twice at the end of the completed paragraph, then start the new one.
To Start A New Page, hit <Control> + <Enter> [Macintosh users should hit <Shift> + <Enter>]. The page numbers are inserted automatically.
Keep typing until you’re done with the story. How many paragraphs ought to be on each page is up to the child, but remember to leave room for illustrations!
7. When you’re ready to type the last paragraph(s) of the story, type them in place of the prompt words "Last Text Page." [The same technique you’ve been using since Step 3]
8. Leave the words "The End" just as they are.
9. Go to the "About the Author" page. Using the same steps as in #3, replace the prompt words “Author Text” with the child’s biographical text.
10. Congratulations! You did it! Now you just need to send the results to the Tiger Publishing coordinator for your class.
Preferred Method: Send the story electronically, either as an e-mail attachment or (if your class’s coordinator has said they’d prefer to do it this way) on a CD or floppy disk. Volunteers will print, cut, and bind a copy.
Alternate Method: Print the story out and send a clean, flat paper copy to school with your child, preferably in a 9 x 12 manila envelope or folder stiffened with a sheet of cardboard. Volunteers will cut and bind that copy. |
