National Honor Society

Selection to the National Honor Society is a privilege bestowed upon rising Seniors in the Spring of their Junior year. Membership into the National Honor Society is not accrued through an application, but is strictly granted by the Faculty, as an honor to the candidate. Any disciplinary action that the candidate has received can result in non-selection. Each Spring, students who have qualified with a 3.8 GPA or better will attend a mandatory information meeting. During the meeting, candidates will hear and see pertinent NHS information and receive their Student Activity Packet along with a time line for the completion of the packet.

Selection Criteria:

Students qualify on the basis of the following four criteria. Deficiency in any one of the four criteria may result in non-selection.

Scholarship: Candidates eligible for election to the chapter should have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.8 (out of 4.0) weighted grade point average.

Service: The student needs to be well rounded with participation in extra-curricular activities in the school and in the community. This should be demonstrated by volunteering cheerfully and enthusiastically to give one’s services to the school, community and classroom.

Leadership: The student should have held a minimum of three or more leadership positions such as a club or student government chairmanship, band squad leader, or sports team captain. Acceptance of any documented leadership positions in the community will be limited to only one and must be approved by the Faculty Council. All leadership should have an established pattern of the student seeking and carrying out leadership responsibilities over an extended period of time, as opposed to an ad hoc event.

Character: The student needs to demonstrate positive attitudes toward school, faculty, peers and studies. Courtesy, concern, and respect should be shown by all candidates. During the student’s years at Walton, the student should show desirable behavior at all times. Arrogant behavior is not allowed. There cannot be any instance of major infraction of any school rules. The student should adhere to the dress code.

The entire Faculty will provide input on each of the prospective NHS Candidates to the Faculty Council concerning the Candidate’s Service, Leadership and Character. Students are selected for membership using the four (4) criteria listed and faculty input.
