South Cobb and Wheeler Sophomores Win Athlete of the Week
Cobb Schools' Athlete of the Week program is a weekly recognition of a male and a female student-athlete that perform at high levels in their sport, in the classroom, and in their school communities. The program is made possible by support from BSN.
This week's winners are sophomores from South Cobb and Wheeler:
Destinee Frink, Cross Country, South Cobb
Destinee broke her own personal record at the Metro Classic Meet, running a personal best 5K time of 19:39, making her one of the top five contenders in the region. Destinee led the race the entire time and beat her competitors with a massive lead, finishing minutes before anyone else. This is the 3rd meet in a row that she has placed first among ALL of the females in the race!
Currently a sophomore, Destinee never ran track or cross country before coming to South Cobb. She has made great gains since her freshman year and continues to improve. Under South Cobb coaches, Destinee ran youth summer track in the summer of 2022 and qualified for Junior Olympics in her event.
"Destinee has a great personality, is a great athlete, and a great addition to the South Cobb Athletic program," said her coach Andrele Kelly. "She always motivates other athletes to perform better and is a leader on the team. Her charisma brings light and positivity to the team and there is never a dull moment with her dancing or her jokes."
"On the course, Destinee takes the lead as soon as the gun goes off and is an aggressive runner," continued Coach Kelly. "She takes the same leadership in the classroom by asking her teacher questions, regardless if she is the only one doing so. She has no fear in standing out and shows this in the classroom and on the team. She has a great work ethic and knows how to balance being a multi-sport athlete and maintaining her grades."
Josiah Allen, Football, Wheeler
In Wheeler's recent home victory over North Atlanta, Josiah had 25 carries for 270 yards and 1 touchdown. He is averaging nearly 150 yards per game and has scored 5 touchdowns so far this season. His solid running is a large contribution to the Wildcats current 2-game win streak that they will try to extend to three against Campbell tonight. Josiah is a sophomore and has been playing football for nine years.
A 4.0 student, Josiah plans to major in Business Administration in college with a concentration on Marketing. His teachers say he is a pleasure to have in class.
"Josiah is a well-respected leader on the football team," said Wheeler Head Coach Bryan Love. "His consistent work ethic is what sets him apart from others. He is a tireless worker with a passion to be great at everything he does. He is respectful of his teachers, administration, and coaches and a delight to be around. He leads by example and is a great mentor to others."
"He is a leader on and off the field," said Wheeler Athletic Director Brittny Jones. "Josiah is involved in a variety of other sports and clubs/organizations on campus and he sets a great example for his peers at Wheeler High School. He is an outstanding example of what a student-athlete is and should be!"
Congratulations Destinee and Josiah! Your performances in sports and in the classroom are impressive and an inspiration to everyone. Great work, South Cobb and Wheeler. Keep it going...!
