Pope Wrestling Welcomes New Program Director

May 22, 2026 — As the school year came to a close, Pope High School made an impressive addition to its athletic program. Wesley Adams was hired as the Greyhounds’ next Director of Wrestling, overseeing both the school’s boys and girls wrestling teams as well as the Pope junior wrestling program.
“We are excited to welcome Wesley Adams and his family to Pope High School,” Athletic Director Josh Mathews shared in a press release from the school. “Coach Adams comes to Pope with a proven record of building young people into competitive yet contributing members of a school community through the sport of wrestling. It was our goal to find a coach who has experienced success both as a competitive wrestler and as a coach at multiple levels, and we did that in Coach Adams. While we were impressed with his accomplishments and experience, what stood out most throughout the process was the consistent feedback we received about his ability to build meaningful relationships with students and positively impact young people.”
Coach Adams helped lead his previous school to back-to-back Area Duals and Traditional Championships, a Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State Dual Runner-Up finish, and a GHSA State Traditional Championship.
A former collegiate wrestler, Adams was a four-year starter who was twice selected as the team captain. He was a four-time qualifier for the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships and was a National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-American.
With these qualifications, the Pope athletic department is excited about what’s to come. The feeling is mutual.
“Pope is a tremendous community, and I am incredibly excited to be a part of it,” Coach Adams said. “The wrestling program there has a strong tradition of success, and I look forward to building on that tradition. There is a great deal of returning and young wrestlers across both teams, and I am excited about the future. Our goal is to rebuild the boys' team into a state-level contender while helping the girls' team continue to grow and reach new heights. I feel fortunate to be able to lead this program, and I am grateful for the opportunity and the trust the Pope administration has placed in me.”
In the academic space, Coach Adams will join Pope’s mathematics department, as he holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Mathematics Education.
