Improvements at Indian Hills Pkwy and Fairfield Dr/East Side Elementary School main driveway
October 18, 2012
Cobb County Department of Transportation and Cobb County School District continue to collaborate in pursuing planned traffic and safety improvements at the main school driveway on Indian Hills Parkway. Progress thus far has confirmed extensive major underground utility impacts, requiring both agencies to obtain agreements and relocations with area utilities prior to scheduling needed utility work. As a result, utility relocations cannot begin before winter, when unpredictable weather typically results in construction delays which would negatively impact pedestrians and other traffic.
These extensive utility relocations, coupled with uncertain weather for construction, which often continues into early spring, would be too disruptive to the safety of students and others to attempt completion of this project while school is in session. Given all these factors, improvements have been scheduled for late spring and early summer of 2013, with all work to be completed by the start of school in August.
New After School Enrichment Dismissal Procedures Effective Monday, October 15
October 12, 2012
The school administration was recently notified by a local representative from the Fire Department that we were breaking a county ordinance that has been in place since last school year. The ordinance states that cars may park only in the fire lane thirty minutes prior to regular dismissal and thirty minutes after regular dismissal. At no time may a car be left unattended. We assumed this rule would also apply in the afternoon for After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) dismissals. This, however, is not the case. Therefore, we will begin a new release procedure for ASEP’s on Monday, October 15th.
Students who participate in ASEP programs and are picked up directly after the program ends will be released at the bus port near the gymnasium. Vehicles will enter through the bus entrance and follow the newly painted drive to pick up students. There will be two lanes. The far right one is for pick-up. The inside lane closest to the island will be for emergency purposes only. It will not serve as a pick-up lane. Cars will need to proceed in the outside right lane until they see a double line at the end of the island closest to the bus port area. Students will be walked out to the vehicles by the ASEP teachers. If you are in Mrs. Kaltreider’s ART classes, she will be doing dismissal directly out of her classroom.
In the event that it rains, cars follow the same car lane but will be directed to pick-up students beneath the canopy by the gymnasium. You can also park in the parking lot and walk to the side door exit to meet your student.
Our ASEP programs have staggered dismissal times so we are strongly encouraging parents to arrive only 5 minutes before your child is dismissed so that the order of cars matches dismissal.
If your child stays in the regular ASP program or is dismissed from an ASEP program to remain in ASP, you will need to continue to park in the main parking lot to pick up your child. Keeping these two dismissals separate may improve traffic flow.Do not park on the red curb and get out of your car at any time.
We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we work through this matter. We will be assessing the situation the first few days to see if any other adjustments will need to be made.
Thank you on behalf of the East Side Administration and Leslie Kingston ASEP Coordinator for East Side’s Foundation. FALL
FESTIVAL PARKING UPDATE: The bus lane will be closed on Friday, October 19th for the Fall Festival. Please use the original pick up procedures on that day.

Barge, along with staff in the GA Department of Education Curriculum and Instruction division, will host a web-delivered broadcast through Georgia Public Broadcasting to introduce to all stakeholders the upcoming Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS).
To provide you with a brief history, the state of Georgia, along with 47 other states, has adopted a new set of standards that are geared towards unifying the standards that are used from state to state and enabling students to be college & 21st century workplace and career ready upon graduating from high school.
If you are unable to view the initial broadcast, it will air again from 4:00PM-5:00PM, and then an archived version will appear the following day. Three days later, a closed-caption version of the broadcast will air through the same site. The Web link for the initial broadcast and the archived sessions will be:
