DIG INTO READING!
Watch the video for
great book ideas! You may even
see some Murdock readers!
A
Collaborative Approach to Summer Reading
The Cobb County
School District’s Library Media Education
and English Language Arts Departments have
partnered with the Cobb County Public
Library (CCPL) to provide complementary
summer reading programs for grades K-5.
The theme for this summer’s K-5 reading
program is “Dig into Reading!”
The Cobb County
Public Library provides reading logs
for elementary students to document their
reading throughout the summer. Prior
to returning to school in August,
participants will submit their reading logs
to any CCPL branch. Any books read for
the Cobb County School District program can
be listed on the CCPL log. For more
information about summer events at the
public library, please visit
www.cobbcat.org/srp.
To participate in the
Cobb County School District/Murdock
summer reading program, students will select
books to read and complete suggested
activities for them. Any books read
for the Cobb County Public Library program
can also be used with the CCSD program
activities.
The CCSD/Murdock program
includes:
Two suggested reading
lists: one for Primary and one for
Intermediate, each paired with an activity
sheet. (Please note that these are
just suggestions. Students may choose
to read any age and level-appropriate book.
Consult your public librarian for additional
recommendations).
To participate, students
should:
1. Read a book of their
choice.
2. Choose and complete an
activity (from either sheet as appropriate)
for the book they read.
3. Repeat #1 and #2 until
at least four books and four activities have
been read and completed.
4. On the activity sheet,
have a parent initial the four (or more)
activities completed and then turn in the
signed activity sheet to your Media
Specialist during the first week of
school.
5. Record the
titles of ALL books read during the summer
on the CCPL Summer Reading Log and turn it
in to any CCPL branch to be eligible for a
certificate and the CCPL End-of-Summer
Celebration.

New Absence Protocol
The primary goal of this attendance protocol is to address unexcused absences for students ages six to fifteen.
All students and parents/guardians are encouraged
to review the District's attendance protocol, which
details the steps schools and staff will take to
report, investigate, and prosecute student
absenteeism. Regular school attendance is a vital
part of a student's academic and future work
success.

Fire Lane Changes for
Schools

On March 13, 2012, the Cobb
County Fire Lane Ordinance was amended to include a
provision for student pick-up at schools.
The ordinance now allows a vehicle to be located in
a fire lane for 30 minutes prior to the afternoon
school end time and 30 minutes after the school end
time, as long as a driver is behind the wheel.
Cobb County school end times are available on the
Cobb County School District website.
The ordinance applies to private
schools as well.
Stopping or parking a vehicle in a fire lane at any
other time is prohibited, unless passengers are
actively loading or unloading.
Enforcement of this new provision will begin
on April 9, 2012.
Fire lanes can be identified by
“No Parking Fire Lane”
signage and/or curbing that is red in color.
Fire lane violations currently result in a fine of
$135.00. |
