Nickajack Summer Reading Program

This summer Nickajack Elementary students have an opportunity to participate in two summer reading programs:  Scholastic and myON.

The Scholastic program (http://www.scholastic.com/ups/campaigns/src-2016/kids) began on May 9th and will end on September 9th.  Students track the number of minutes they read and go to the Scholastic website, login and record their reading minutes.  Students may read whatever they like, both print and digital, every minute counts!

The myOn program (http://about.myon.com/reading-campaigns/2016-summer) began on May 23rd and will end on September 2nd.  Students will log into their myOn account and read books.  Prizes will be awarded to the top readers.  Any time spent reading in myOn can be counted and logged into the Scholastic site.

The Cobb County Public Libraries (Vinings branch) and the Smyrna Public Library (http://www.smyrnacity.com/your-government/departments/smyrna-public-library) are local collaborators in the summer reading program.  They will host a variety of events and provide a vast selection of reading resources.

For suggested reading lists and resources visit the Cobb County Library Media Education summer reading website:

Jon and Riley Go to Washington D.C.

and make us all proud!

5th Grade Students, Jonathan Fairgrieves and Riley Davis Win 1st place in the Nation
for Their Invention!  Read on below...

On March 16, 2016 two teams representing Nickajack Elementary School, Cobb County School District, competed in Georgia Tech's Inventure Challenge. This innovation competition is designed to foster creativity, invention, and entrepreneurship. Participating teams were Seasonal Comfort presented by 5th graders Peyton Bedgood and Baye Wilson and Succulent Solution presented by 5th graders Riley Davis and Jonathan Fairgrieves. The teams were coached by Advanced Learning Program Specialists Dana Zhun and Amanda Wood. Both teams enjoyed the challenge presented by the competition. Team Succulent Solution placed 2nd in the elementary division, as well as, being recognized as the People's Choice recipient for K-12. This honor qualified them to compete at the national level.

Team Succulent Solution traveled to Washington, D.C. on May 19th to compete in the STEMIE Coalition National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo (NICEE). This is an annual celebration of K-12 inventors and entrepreneurs from across the U.S. In addition to competing against other teams from across the nation, participants visited the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and attended lectures led by a NASA engineer and the Chief of Staff, USPTO.

Through their research Mr. Fairgrieves and Mr. Davis were shocked to learn that 1.8 billion people in the world suffer from lack of access to clean water. Inspired by this, team Succulent Solution was driven to find a cost-effective, green, renewable solution to this problem. Their solution has the potential to help people world-wide with limited access to clean water. Their innovative invention won the First Place Award for the Fifth Grade Inventor For Best Overall Grade 5 Invention.

Library Books DUE back ASAP please!
