Nicholson News and Announcements:

New 'Buzz-in' Entry System coming!            In early May a new 'buzz-in' door lock system will be installed at the entrance of our school.  This feature will provide added security during school hours by keeping the main entrance locked at all times except between 7:15 - 8:10 AM as students arrive at school.  A door bell and camera will alert office staff that a guest has arrived, and once identified, they can be buzzed in to the school.  Please click on the link below to read more about this system in a letter from Mrs. Shue.

Box Tops Raised $1652.10 for 2012-2013
We want to thank all of you who have kept an eye out for Box Tops on your household purchases and so dutifully sent them in during this school year.  Those contributions raised over $1600 for the students of Nicholson.  What easy money!  These funds will be added to the PTA budget, and used to buy resources for our school.  Be sure to save them over the summer -- we'll be collecting again next year!

2013-2014 Class Placement Information
It is so hard to believe that April is upon us and we are beginning to make plans for 2013-14.  As we begin thinking about next school year, one of the most important things we do is class placement.  It is our desire to provide each child with excellent instruction in an engaging, inviting and safe atmosphere.  For this reason, we carefully consider placement for each and every child.
Our purpose for sharing this with you is to review the procedures for student placement.  Much time and effort is given to creating a heterogeneous blend of boys and girls with consideration for learning styles, academics and behavior.  While our highly qualified teachers subscribe to consistent standards, they have a variety of delivery methods.  To the best of our ability, we try to match teacher with student.  Current teachers, administrators, counselors, and specialists thoughtfully review each class list.  This is a lengthy process which is not really finalized until late in the summer or even the day of Meet & Greet.
In past years, parents were encouraged to submit letters or e-mails to administrators.  To streamline this process, we have created a Class Placement form that we are asking you to use if you would like to give input on placement.  A link to the form can be found below.
Individual conferences with administration are not necessary.  With or without a Placement form, each Nicholson student will be placed with great care.  Your child’s success is our goal, and we appreciate your partnership with us on that!

The Vega Challenge:

Dear Parents,

Have you heard about Vega?  Vega is Nicholson’s mascot and if you don’t know, Vega is the brightest star in the northern constellation.
Beginning Monday, March 11, 2013, we are offering a challenge (The Vega Challenge) for all 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students.  The CRCT will be here before we know it and we all know that every practice opportunity just helps us increase our skills, fine tune our test taking strategies, and build the confidence needed for doing our best on the test.  Your teachers have been hard at work creating practice tests on the OAS (Online Assessment System) and we are ready for you to go online and practice, practice, practice.
The details for the challenge can be found in the links below, so let’s start practicing so that we can do our very best on the CRCT and shine like “Vega”!

Volunteer Hours:    To all those wonderful Nicholson volunteers, we want to thank you for all you do here at Nicholson. We currently have logged 1,091 volunteer hours. Our goal is to log 3,000 by the end of the school year. On the volunteer sign-up on the desk in the front lobby, all you have to do is record your name and the hours you spent volunteering.  We’ll do the rest. Gradually, you will see our Volunteer-o-meter rising higher and higher every week. Everything you do here at Nicholson, whether big or small, helps make Nicholson shine even brighter!

Lost and Found
Our Lost and Found box is overflowing!!  Are your kids missing a coat, jacket or sweater?  Please be sure to stop by the Lost and Found---which is located outside the cafeteria, across from the Music room.  AND---be sure at least your last name is written in all your children's outerwear.  If they misplace it, it makes it easy for us to return it to the right person!

Box Tops for Education
Be sure to keep an eye out for the Box Tops coupons located a variety of popular products.  Did you know that each coupon is worth 10 cents for Nicholson?  Please help us earn 'free' money by clipping these coupons and have your student return them to the Media Center.

Common Core Georgia Performance Standards
Cobb County Schools will be implementing a new set of standards in August 2012.  These standards, which were developed from the Common Core State Standards, work to ensure that all students are better prepared for college and future careers.  The Common Core standards also provide students in different states with the same opportunities to learn at high levels and reach towards higher standards.  For more information, please visit the following links:

Nicholson is a 'Steps to Respect' School
We believe bullying is unfair and one-sided.  It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out, on purpose.  Cobb County Schools has designed a pamphlet  to help parents and students navigate the unclear roadways of behaviors that can be seen as hurtful teasing or bullying behavior.  Click here to access pamphlet.
