SPLOST stands for Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. It is a one-cent tax on all consumer goods that must be approved by voters in a referendum which will be held on March 21st. Education SPLOST (Ed-SPLOST) receipts can be used only for school-related capital improvements. The current Ed-SPLOST expires Dec. 31, 2018.

Why do we still need SPLOST?  To continue providing the best learning environments for students. To view the informational sheet on Ed-SPLOST V, please CLICK HERE.

Mrs. Karen Hersey Wins Georgia Teachers of Mathematics Award!
Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Karen Hersey, received the Georgia Council of Mathematics award on Wednesday, October 26.  Three awards, one each for elementary, middle and secondary schools, are given to excellent teachers in the state of Georgia, who have strong content foundations in mathematics appropriate for their teaching level, show evidence of growth in the teaching of mathematics, and show evidence of professional involvement in both the Georgia and National Councils of Teachers of Mathematics.  Nicholson is very proud of Mrs. Hersey, and her accomplishments!

Children's Author, Robyn Hood Black visits Nicholson, courtesy of Cobb EMC's 'Literacy Week'
Each year, Cobb EMC sponsors a 'Literacy Week' and arranges author visits for selected Cobb County schools.  This year, Robyn Hood Black came to speak to our students.  She talked about the writing process, and shared some of her books and poetry.  She also did an interactive session where the students participated in writing a story based on an imaginary animal character of their creation that she illustrates, and then the audience helps write the story!  It was a wonderful day of learning!

Parent Surveys
This time of year brings the beginning of our surveys! We are asking all our parents to please take the Climate Survey by the Georgia Department of Education. You can take the survey in the comfort of your own home. The results will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating on our College Career Ready Performance Index, better known as the CCRPI.  Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the GA. Dept. of Education for analysis. The link is;

Thank you in advance for providing your input! It is of great value to our school and community!

Parent Tips for Standardized Tests

Does your student have an Office 365 account?
If you use Office 365 through your child's student account, please be aware that the passwords have been changed.  The password is your child's network password, which is now their birthdate in month/day format.  For example, if your child's birthday is April 7, their password is 0407.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Messinger in the Media Center @ lisa.messinger@cobbk12.org

Student Dismissal Transportation Changes
Dismissal is one of the most important times in our day.  We work hard to ensure that our students get to their afterschool destination safely.  We will not take transportation changes over the phone, via fax or via email.  This is a safety measure that we MUST enforce to keep your child safe.  The Nicholson Transportation Change form, with a signature, must be sent in with your student in order for us to change your student’s afternoon transportation.  If the student arrives in the morning without this form the parent/guardian must come into the front office to fill one out since a signature is mandatory.

If you are picking up your student at dismissal and do not have a carpool tag, it is necessary for you to come into the front office and show identification before we can release the student into your custody.

All early dismissals or transportation changes must be received before 1:45 pm.

In our efforts to establish Nicholson Elementary as a safe, welcoming and purposeful learning environment, we have implemented a framework called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).  PBIS actively encourages students to achieve their academic potential while also behaving with good character.  At Nicholson, the focus is on teaching and encouraging appropriate behavior in all areas of the school, concentrating on the instruction of how to be a “STAR”: Safe, Trustworthy, Accountable, and Respectful.  Students who exhibit the characteristics of a Nicholson Star maximize their learning experience and do not detract from the learning opportunities of their classmates. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE REVIEW PBIS INFORMATION. Let us remember ONE TEAM, ONE GOAL, STUDENT SUCCESS

New!! Car Rider Dismissal Expectations
Please review with your children!

1. Students are expected to be silent.

2. Students are expected to sit in their zone.

3. Students are expected to follow staff directions.

*Staff will be handing out Star Bucks during dismissal as positive reinforcement.

*If parents do not have their car tag, they are expected to come inside to sign out their child. This is to ensure your child’s safety.
