New Principal Profile: Meghan Smith, Compton Elementary School

July 8, 2025—Compton Elementary School is welcoming a new leader who already feels right at home. Meghan Smith, a proud product of Cobb Schools and a longtime district educator, is stepping into the role of principal at Compton, bringing over two decades of experience, deep community ties, and a strong commitment to student success.
“This opportunity means a lot to me both personally and professionally. I’m a proud graduate of Cobb Schools, and my husband actually went to Compton as a student. So, I already feel a strong connection to the community,” Principal Smith shared. “I can’t wait to get to know the students, staff, and families. Compton has such a rich history and deep sense of pride, and I’m honored to be part of it.”
As she begins this new chapter, Principal Smith looks forward to honoring Compton’s traditions while working collaboratively with staff, families, and students to build on the school’s continued success. Get to know more about Principal Meghan Smith below:
Question: How long have you been an educator?
Answer: “This is my 21st year in education. I spent 10 years teaching at Sanders Elementary, then served as both a teacher and administrator at Vaughan, and for the past 7 years, I’ve been the assistant principal at Ford. It’s hard to believe how quickly the time has flown by. I’ve loved every stage of the journey, and I truly can’t imagine doing anything else.”
Question: What does “student success” mean to you?
Answer: “To me, student success means every child feels valued, supported, and challenged. It goes beyond test scores. It's about helping students grow into confident, compassionate, and curious learners who are proud of who they are and excited about where they’re going.”
Question: Under your leadership, how will you build on the school’s successes?
Answer: “First and foremost, I believe in listening and building strong relationships. Compton already has so many great things in place, and I want to honor that by working alongside teachers and families to keep growing. Together, we’ll focus on what’s best for kids academically, socially, and emotionally and make sure every student continues to thrive.”
Question: What role do you see parents and the community playing in supporting student success?
Answer: “Families and the community are essential to everything we do. When schools and families work as a team, students benefit in every way. I’m excited to partner with parents and community members, keep communication open, and create as many opportunities as possible for involvement and connection.”
Question: What do you like most about being an educator/principal, or what is your favorite memory as an educator?
Answer: “The relationships are what I love most. Whether it’s a student who finally gets a tricky concept, a parent who shares a sweet story, or seeing a former student all grown up, it’s those moments that stick with me. They’re the heart of why I do what I do.”
Question: Outside of school, where might parents and students find you, or what’s an interesting fact about you that the school community might enjoy learning?
Answer: “Outside of school, I’m usually at a cross-country or track meet cheering on my twins, Ansley and Bryson. We’re big fans of being outdoors and spending time together as a family. And if the Dawgs are playing, there’s no doubt I’ll be watching.”
