About Health and Physical Education

A student’s health directly influences his or her success in school and beyond. For this reason, parents and teachers need to understand factors that reinforce healthy and unhealthy behaviors. Health Education in Cobb County School District is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to: make decisions, become advocates of healthy living, and choose healthy behaviors for life. A unified approach to education for health and wellness (parents, community, and school) coupled with a planned, sequential curriculum in health education throughout the school years, is necessary to nurture the development of a lifestyle that fosters and exemplifies good health and supports learning.

Physical Education is a life-long process and an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Daily, quality physical education is needed to increase the physical competence, health-related fitness, self-responsibility and enjoyment of physical activity for all students so that they can be physically active for a lifetime. Research shows that students, who are more physically fit, have good balance, rhythm, and coordination are more likely to be academically

Physical Education Goals

As a result of studying Physical Education in the Cobb County School District, a physically literate student:

  1. Has learned the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities.
  2. Knows the implications and the benefits of involvement in various types of physical activities.
  3. Participates regularly in physical activity.
  4. Is physically active.
  5. Values physical activity and its contributions to a healthful lifestyle.

FITNESSGRAM

The FITNESSGRAM physical fitness assessment measures aerobic capacity, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition. We ask that you encourage your child to participate with his/her best effort and to the best of their ability. The FITNESSGRAM assessment is a measure of good health as opposed to athletic ability. Each student will be assessed using the following assessment components:

PACER or One-Mile Run…………………..4th-12th grade students assessed

Curl-Up………………………….………………..4th-12th grade students assessed

Push-Up…………………………….….………..4th-12th grade students assessed

Back-Saver Sit and Reach……..….……..4th-12th grade students assessed

Height/Weight………………………..……… 1st-12th grade students assessed

FITNESSGRAM assessments use criterion-referenced standards. This means that a student can compare his/her scores with standards that have been identified for good health. This type of system prevents students from being compared to other students participating in the assessment.

FITNESSGRAM assesses the current fitness level of students and promotes individual goal setting to allow students to take ownership of their health.

FITNESSGRAM does not assess skill or athletic ability.

A confidential FITNESSGRAM report will be provided for each student to take home. This report will include your child’s scores and information on the FITNESSGRAM Healthy Fitness Zones. The Healthy Fitness Zone represents the level of fitness needed for good health. The information on this private report will not be displayed or made public.

For more information regarding the FITNESSGRAM assessment, contact your child’s physical education teacher or please refer to http://www.fitnessgram.net/faqparents
