A Message from Our Principal, Dr. Rachel
Greetings Eagles!
It is a true honor to serve as your principal here at Austell Elementary School. My journey in education includes a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, a Master of Science in Conflict Management from Kennesaw State University, an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Berry College, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Kennesaw State University. Each step of this journey has strengthened my commitment to supporting students, families, and educators in meaningful ways.
At Austell Elementary, I believe our school is more than a place of learning; it is a community where curiosity is nurtured, potential is discovered, and every child is encouraged to grow academically, think critically, and develop socially and emotionally. I firmly believe that learning is a lifelong journey, and I am proud to partner with our dedicated staff and families to create an environment where every student feels valued, inspired, and empowered to succeed.
For over 21 years, I’ve had the privilege of working in the Cobb County School District, developing a deep appreciation for our community’s dedication, resilience, and spirit. My favorite part about being a principal is helping others see their potential and coaching to pay that gift forward. When students, teachers, and families see their own potential and reach new heights, they are truly successful. Every day, I witness incredible growth and achievement, and nothing inspires me more.
When I am not at school, you might find me cycling along local trails, hiking with my family and friends, crocheting colorful creations, getting lost in a good book or action movie, or even knocking down a few pins at the bowling alley.
Thank you for trusting me and my faculty with your children’s education. I look forward to a year filled with curiosity, growth, and success for every student in our school.

Greetings, Austell Eagles!
My name is Dr. Lashonda Smith, and I am excited to join the Austell ES Nest as your Assistant Principal. I began working in the Cobb County School District in 2008 and have served in a variety of roles at the district and local school levels. I am entering my seventh year serving in an administrative role. I earned my B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa, M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Kennesaw State University, Ed. S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Lincoln Memorial University and Ed. D. in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education.
I am driven by my why which is rooted in my strong belief in the power of the village. As a leader, it is my priority to ensure we use our collective resources to ensure each student’s growth and success. I believe students can reach their highest potential when their individual academic, social, emotional, and physical needs are embraced, supported, and celebrated.
When I’m not at school, you might find me playing tennis, attending a concert or festival, or traveling with my friends and family. I truly enjoy being active and enjoying life to the fullest!
I am excited to join the Austell community as we look to the future with a focus on experience, engagement, and excellence. I am committed to investing in our students, supporting our staff, and partnering with our community to help every learner succeed. I am honored to serve as the Support and Services Administrator at Austell Elementary. Throughout my career, I have served as a special education teacher, social studies teacher, department chair, and district program support specialist. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to inclusive practices, high-quality instruction, a positive school culture, and meaningful partnerships with families.
In my role, I look forward to collaborating with students, families, teachers, and community partners to address individual needs and create a safe, supportive, and welcoming learning environment.
When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cheering on my son at his baseball games, and attending local festivals.
I am excited to join the Austell Elementary family. I look forward to a wonderful year together!
