First day of school

August 5, 2026 — Before the first bell rang, yellow school buses were already making their way through neighborhoods across Cobb County, carrying students eager to begin a new year of learning. More than 105,000 Cobb students headed back to school for the official first day of the 2026-2027 school year.

Families captured first-day photos, teachers welcomed students into thoughtfully prepared classrooms, and schools once again came alive with the energy that defines the start of another exciting school year.

Across Cobb Schools, classrooms were filled with smiles, curiosity, and the promise of another year focused on excellence.

Superintendent Chris Ragsdale spent the first day of school visiting students and educators at Pickett's Mill Elementary School, where he experienced firsthand the excitement of a new beginning. As he walked through classrooms, Superintendent Ragsdale met with students eager to share their first-day experiences and observed teachers already engaging learners through meaningful instruction.

"Every year, I have the same goal: to see our students become successful and stay successful," said Superintendent Ragsdale. "It's our job to make sure we provide opportunities and paths for every student to be successful regardless of what their dream is."

The visit reflected what is happening across every Cobb school: dedicated educators creating welcoming environments where every child has the opportunity to thrive. The first day serves as more than just the beginning of a new calendar—it marks the continuation of Cobb's commitment to providing every student with an exceptional educational experience.

At Osborne High School, the Class of 2027 celebrated their "first final day" with the annual Senior Walk. Seniors gathered with classmates, teachers, and proud family members before walking the halls together, marking the beginning of their last year of high school.

For some students, this year's first day marked more than the start of a new school year—it was the beginning of an entirely new experience. Students arrived at the Cobb Innovation and Technology Academy at Allatoona for the first time, becoming the inaugural class to learn in the district's newest innovative learning environment. Designed to provide hands-on, career-focused learning opportunities, the District's second career academy expands access to programs that prepare students with the skills and experiences needed for success in college, careers, and beyond.

Student success begins with safe schools. Cobb Schools continues to invest in comprehensive safety measures through Cobb Shield, the District's multi-layered approach to safety, designed to provide secure learning environments where students and staff can focus on what matters most—teaching and learning. The District invests more than $35 million annually in student safety.

From trained safety personnel and advanced security technology to the District's nationally recognized Vapor Wake K-9 program, safety remains at the center of every school day. These ongoing investments reflect the District's commitment to protecting students, staff, and visitors while creating schools where families can feel confident their children are learning in a secure environment.

One Team Focused on Student Success

Behind every successful school day is an entire team working together. Teachers, administrators, bus drivers, school nutrition staff, custodians, counselors, paraprofessionals, and countless support professionals each play an essential role in helping students succeed. Members of the Cobb Schools Board of Education also rolled up their sleeves to kick off the new year and welcome students back to school.

Families and community partners strengthen that work by supporting learning both inside and outside the classroom. Together, this shared commitment creates opportunities for every student to grow academically, socially, and emotionally throughout the year.

The excitement of the first day is only the beginning. Throughout the coming months, students will discover new passions, overcome challenges, celebrate achievements, and create lasting memories. Every classroom will tell a story of perseverance, innovation, collaboration, and growth. As another school year begins, Cobb Schools remains focused on the values that guide every decision: excellence in education, an unwavering commitment to safety, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Welcome back, Cobb! Here's to an outstanding year of learning, leadership, and limitless possibilities.
