October 22, 2025 — As Cobb Schools recognizes National School Lunch Week, Food and Nutrition staff across the district reflected on the importance of the jobs they do to fuel student success.

Brumby Elementary School Cafe Manager Linda Faniel has worked for Cobb Schools for 13 years, stirring up laughter, comfort, and countless trays of warm, healthy meals for her students.

"I don't just serve food — I wipe faces, I tie shoes, I give hugs, I do it all," said Faniel.

Before stepping in to help keep students' tummies full, Faniel gained more than 20 years of experience in Atlanta's food service industry. But, her heart for kids drew her to Cobb Schools where she gets to see the impact she makes every day.

Over the years Faniel has learned more and more about the students at Brumby and has become a staple within the Cobb community.

"Knowing I make a difference for the kids. I've always been in an area where the kids have had food insecurities, and it's been the most joyful thing for a kid to come in and say, 'I like your food,' or I missed your food over the holidays,'" shared Faniel.

Across all Cobb Schools, students saw a wide variety of lunches for National School Lunch Week (October 20-24).

This year's theme was "Taste the World: Your School Lunch Passport!"

The special week served up a special menu containing food items that showcased cuisines and flavors from around the world. Students tasted dishes such as Korean-inspired BBQ pizza, Hawaiian-inspired luau pork sandwich, Hawaiian-inspired BBQ pork sandwich, and South American-inspired chicken salsa verde tamales.

"Without food, you can't learn, and knowing I'm helping them learn makes a difference. And it's my goal to make a difference," declared the Brumby Cafe Manager.

As if the empty trays and big smiles left any doubt, Faniel said the school staff and students enjoyed the variety of foods her team served throughout the week.

National School Lunch Week is a celebration—and a reminder—of how a healthy, nutritious meal can fuel learning and brighten a child’s day. The week also spotlights dedicated and caring staff like Faniel, who pour love and compassion into every tray they serve.

For Faniel, the connection she builds with students is what matters most.

"It's not forgotten when they say I'm their favorite lunch lady. To know I'm their favorite lunch lady has made a world of a difference," said Faniel.
