Downloading and Uploading Files

In an online class, you may need to download files from CTLS, open them on your device, complete work, and upload files back into your course. This guide explains the basics so you know what to look for and what to do next.

Overview

Files Move Two Ways

Sometimes the lesson will provide a file for you to download. Other times, you will upload a completed file as part of an assignment. Knowing the difference can help you avoid confusion and make sure your work is submitted correctly.

Download

Get a File from the Course

Download a file when the lesson provides a document, PDF, spreadsheet, audio file, video file, or other resource that needs to be opened outside the browser.

Upload

Send a File to Your Teacher

Upload a file when you need to submit completed work, such as a document, slideshow, image, spreadsheet, recording, or other assignment file.

How You Know a File Needs to Be Downloaded

Your cue that a file needs to be downloaded will usually be a text hyperlink, a button, or an image. In many cases, the file may be a PDF, document, audio file, video file, or another file type that cannot be displayed directly in the browser.

Remember: Some files need to be downloaded first and then opened in another program on your computer. Know where files go when you click download.

Download How-Tos

Two Common Ways to Download a File

Option 1

Click the Hyperlink or Button

Click the hyperlink or button connected to the file. The file will open in a new tab on the browser or a new window. So, if you don't see anything, check that your browser is not blocking pop-ups. Depending on your browser settings, the file may automatically download, or you may be asked where you want to save it.

Option 2

Right-Click and Save

Right-click on the link or button. If the file can be directly downloaded, a menu may appear with an option

Uploading Files

How to Upload a File

You will likely upload some assignments electronically to your online course. Regardless of the operating system or computer you use, uploading files to a website usually follows the same basic process.

Step 1

Find the Upload Button

From the upload page, locate and select the Browse, Select File, Add Attachment, or similar button.

Step 2

Choose the File from Your Computer

Locate the file on your computer and select it for upload. In many cases, you can double-click the file. After the file is selected, the file name usually appears on the upload form.

Step 3

Submit or Upload

Select the Submit, Upload, Save, or similar button to finish the process.
