Dr. Sonya Cook, Principal Garrett Middle School

June 17, 2026 — With 23 years of experience in education and 20 years of service in Cobb Schools, Garrett Middle School’s new principal brings a deep commitment to student success, strong community connections, and a passion for helping students reach their full potential.

“I am excited to join the Garrett community because I have had the privilege of previously serving this community while at South Cobb High School,” shared Garrett Middle School Principal Dr. Sonya Cook. “During that time, I came to appreciate the strength, pride, and potential that exist within our schools and families. What makes this opportunity even more special is that I live in this community. It is both an honor and a responsibility to now serve the students and families who are also my neighbors.”

Having previously supported students as a high school administrator focused on graduation and postsecondary readiness, Dr. Cook is excited to partner with middle school students, staff, and families to build a strong foundation for future success. Drawn to Garrett’s established culture and sense of community, Dr. Cook looks forward to strengthening relationships, supporting innovation, and continuing the important work already underway.

In the Q&A below, Dr. Cook shares more about her leadership philosophy, vision for student success, and commitment to working alongside families and the community to make Garrett Middle School the best place to teach, lead, and learn. Hint: keep reading to the end for a fun fact that may have some community members doing a double-take.

Question: What does “student success” mean to you?

Answer: "To me, student success means ensuring that every student is prepared for whatever path they choose in life. Our students have different talents, interests, goals, and dreams, and it is our responsibility to provide them with the knowledge, skills, opportunities, and support they need to pursue those dreams. Success is not defined by a single outcome; it is about helping students discover their potential, removing barriers to their growth, and equipping them to become confident, productive, and responsible members of society. When students leave our school prepared to learn, lead, contribute, and thrive, they are successful."

Question: Under your leadership, how will you build on Garrett's successes?

Answer: "Garrett Middle School already has a strong foundation in its mission, vision, and core beliefs. Under my leadership, we will continue to build on the strong traditions and collaborative culture already in place while identifying new opportunities for growth and innovation. My goal is to strengthen the systems, programs, and relationships that support teaching and learning. Together, we will strive to make Garrett Middle School the best place to teach, lead, and learn!"

Question: What role do you see parents and the community playing in supporting student success?

Answer: "I believe student success is a shared responsibility. Schools cannot do it alone, and families and community partners play a critical role in helping students grow. I believe in maintaining open communication, building trusting relationships, and creating meaningful opportunities for families to be involved in our school's life. Together, we can create an environment where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential."

Question: What do you like most about being an educator?

Answer: "What I enjoy most about being an educator is building relationships with students. Some of my favorite moments are when students know they can come to me — not just as their principal, but as someone who genuinely cares about them and wants to see them succeed. I love being a trusted adult, advocate, and source of support when students need one. I also value the opportunity to work alongside talented educators to create such meaningful experiences."

Question: Outside of school, where might parents and students find you, and what’s something the Garrett community might be surprised to learn about you?

Answer: "Outside of school, parents and students will most likely find me spending time with my family. That often means my husband and I attending a cheer event or track and field meet, cheering on our daughters. Our families will also find me taking our Labrador Retriever for a walk around the neighborhood. One fun fact about me: I have a twin sister, so if you think you’ve spotted me somewhere and I didn’t say hello, there’s a chance it wasn’t me after all!"
