Dual Language Immersion (DLI)

Nickajack is proud to implement a strand program of Dual Language Immersion in Kindergarten through 5th grades.
How does DLI work?
Students split their day between instruction in Spanish and English to promote language development and cultural understanding. Students receive Math, Science and Social Studies instruction in Spanish. DLI Spanish Teachers only speak in Spanish in these subjects.
Our DLI Spanish Immersion program will help students become bi-lingual and bi-literate in an ever-changing world.

FAQs about applying for our DLI program for upcoming Kindergartners
When are applications sent out?
Applications for the DLI program are sent out by our registrar as completed Kindergarten applications with all required documents are processed. DLI applications start going out at the end of May.
When is the application due?
The DLI application is due July 1st.
How are applicants selected?
Siblings of current DLI students will be automatically enrolled in the program - a DLI application is required. All remaining applicants are entered into a lottery. Students will be drawn from the pool until all available slots have been filled.
When will I know if my student was selected for the DLI program?
All families are notified of their student’s placement, whether in DLI or not, in late July via CTLS when all other teachers are announced.
Is there anything additional my family can do to enter the program?
We only select based on lottery.
Do you offer Spanish tutoring?
We do not have a Spanish tutoring program. There is a PTA Sponsored Fun Club that offers Spanish.
How long does my child stay in the program?
Entry begins in Kindergarten and students remain in the program through 5th grade,
**Please note: A student may be removed from the program based on scores on Amira. If the student is flagged for interventions or extra support in English, the student will be removed from the program to focus on English language development.
What is the assessment given to DLI students?
The district assessment for DLI is called STAMP. The STAMP assessment measures students progress and language development, while in the program.
Students who perform significantly below their peers may be removed from the program.
