Book Club (grades 4, and 5)

Mission/Purpose: Give students who love to read and talk about books an activity just for them!

Faculty Sponsors: Dawn Alexander, Jessica Morelli, Lisa Kiel (4th grade club)

Description of Past/Planned Activities:  Students read a selected book and then meet after school to talk about it. The membership of the club is limited to 12 students and a sign-up is sent to grade level parents when it is time for a new club. Students are released to parents or ASP at 3:30 PM.

 

Encore

Mission/Purpose: Encore is a combined Chorus and Orff Ensemble that provides a musically enriching environment to engage and empower select 4th and 5th graders.

Faculty Sponsor: Katie Harbolt

Description of Past/Planned Activities: Encore rehearses once a week for an hour and a half. Encore has previously performed in the District XII Elementary Choral Festival, Veterans’ Day Celebrations and local school performances. 

 

Math Olympiad

Mission/Purpose: “[Math Olympiad] is one of the most influential and fun-filled math competition programs in the United States and throughout the world, with over 120,000 students from every state and 39 countries participating. The objectives of MOEMS are to teach multiple strategies for out-of-the-box problem-solving, develop mathematical flexibility in solving those problems, and foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity.” - taken from MOEMS Math Olympiad website

Names of faculty sponsors: Jessica Morelli, Dawn Alexander 

Descriptions of past/planned activities: Students meet twice a month to review problem solving strategies and compete in monthly Math Olympiad November through March. We have placed in the Top 10% both years we’ve participated. We compete in the Cobb County Virtual Math Competitions in October and February. We send a team to the Cobb County Math Face to face competition in April. Students on this team compete as individuals and a team to represent East Side. We have placed in both the team and individual competitions both years we’ve participated.  

 

Science Olympiad

Mission/Purpose: To provide a fun competitive platform for students to collaborate and deepen their science knowledge

Sponsors: Susanne Smith and Mollie Cushing

Description of Past/Planned Activities: There are 18 different events set by the Georgia Science Teachers’ Association. Students are assigned 2 events to practice and compete in at the regional and state level. For more information go to: https://www.georgiascienceteacher.org/GAESO
