Cobb Schools' Athlete of the Week (AOW) program is a weekly recognition of a male and a female student-athlete that perform at high levels in their sport, in the classroom, and in their school communities. The program is made possible by support from BSN Sports.

This week's AOW winners are senior hoopers from Kell and Walton.

Jaylen Colon, Kell, Basketball

A four-year starter for the reigning 5A state champ Longhorns, Jaylen was selected as the player of the tournament at the Kreul Classic in Florida. He also won the 3-point contest at the Arby’s Classic. Jaylen drained 38 three-pointers (!) to win the contest. His Kell teammate, freshman Zach Graves, took second with 33, which more than doubled the amount of the third-place winner with 15. Jaylen is also a great student with a 3.6 GPA and is committed to play collegiate ball at Alabama A&M next season.

"Jaylen represents Kell Basketball with his character, work ethic, and leadership, on and off the court," said Head Coach Jermaine Sellers. "He is a big part of Kell Basketball success."

"He has been a part of teams that have achieved two Region Championships, a State Runner-Up, an Elite-8 appearance, and the program’s first State Championship. He will leave Kell as the most decorated player in school history," said Coach Sellers about his Athlete of the Week.aotw%2023%20(26).png

Kate Bagley, Walton, Basketball

During a senior night victory over Duluth, Kate tallied 8 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Two nights later, she scored 21 points in a 61-53 victory over East Cobb rival Lassiter. She knocked down six three-pointers, and logged 5 assists and 4 rebounds. She has been voted captain by the team her junior and senior seasons. In addition to being a leader on the court, Kate is an excellent student with a 4.1 GPA. She also helps coach the Walton 7th grade team.

"Kate is the definite leader of our team," said her coach Matt Kelterborn, "and she does a great job of being vocal and leading by example. She energizes with her positive spirit and relentless effort. She is extremely caring and a hard worker and always willing to make sacrifices for the greater good of the team. She is an integral part of our success!"

"I am fortunate to have also taught Kate in my Honors Algebra 2 course last year. She is a very dedicated student and intelligent young woman. I mention to my athletes a lot that 'How you do anything is how you do everything.' Kate is one that has always strived for perfection in all facets of life. She is the leader and the motor that drives our team," said Coach Kelterborn proudly.

Great job, Jaylen and Kate! Keep pushing forward on the court and in the classroom. We are proud of each of you and know that you will each continue working hard as you move on to the next stage after high school. Well done also, Kell and Walton coaches and administrators!
