What is Seal of Biliteracy?
The Seal of Biliteracy was established in 2016. This prestigious recognition appears on your diploma and transcript to recognize your demonstrated proficiency in English and at least one additional language. The Georgia Seal of Biliteracy highlights students' linguistic capabilities to colleges, employers, and scholarship committees.
Who can earn the Seal?
Any student who completes the requirements can earn the Seal of Biliteracy.
What are the requirements to earn the Seal?
Requirement 1: Completion of all English Language Arts requirements for graduation with an overall GPA of 3.0 or above in those classes.
Requirement 2: Proficiency in one or more languages other than English, demonstrated by passing a Tier 1 foreign language examination being either:
- an AP examination (score of 4 or higher); or
- an International Baccalaureate (IB) examination (scores of 5 or higher).
Provided, however, that for languages in which an AP or IB examination is not available, students may prove proficiency via the Tier 2 testing option (see pages 6-12 here for those options).
What’s a general timeline for earning the Seal?
- English coursework completed freshman through senior year.
- AP or IB exam junior or senior year.
When do I get the Seal?
- March – April of senior year: Coordinator submits names of Seal of Biliteracy candidates to the Georgia Department of Education.
- Graduation: Seal of Biliteracy recipients receive a seal on their diploma, however, if AP or IB exam is not taken until spring of senior year, then seal will be distributed retroactively in fall after graduation.
When you fill out college applications, you can state that you are a candidate for the Seal of Biliteracy, however, you cannot state that you have earned it (unless you finished all requirements during junior year).
