Garrett Middle School students recently demonstrated their skills in their first national debate competition. The students competed remotely in the Philhistorian Middle School and High School Championship based in California.

In the national competition, 8th grader Prisca placed first in the Program of Oral Interpretation. She also performed well in the Declamation speech event, placing sixth overall after leading for the first two rounds.

Fellow 8th grader Michelle competed in the Impromptu speech event against 86 competitors, earning sixth place nationwide. Impromptu involves a new phrase or word given to the student and immediately delivering the speech in 7 minutes.

Garrett’s Speech and Debate team is the only active middle school speech and debate team in the entire metro Atlanta area.
