Promotion and Retention

Each Thursday and Friday, our PMMS students participate in an activity period referred to as CLIMB. This 39-minute period allows our PMMS staff members the opportunity to provide support to our students in one of the following areas: Advisement, Advocacy, CLIMB Behavior Expectation, Assignment Completion and Sustained Silent Reading time known as DEAR. Each of these periods offers its own support to our students. Advisement, specifically, focuses on the tools students will need to do their best in their classes and promote to the next grade level.

All Cobb County Schools, including Pine Mountain, follows the CCSD Board policy IEH-R entitled Promotion and Retention when determining if a student’s work throughout the school year allows them to move to the next grade level each year. Our intention is to inform and assist you with your child’s academic performance. Knowing these criteria from the beginning of the school year will help you monitor your child’s progress toward the next grade level for the 2022-2023 school year.

For students in grades 6-8, Cobb County School District promotion and retention policy indicates that to earn promotion to the next grade level, the student must meet all the following criteria:

  • Pass math, English/language arts and one additional core subject for the year or demonstrate minimum proficiency on the appropriate state-adopted assessment in math, English/language arts and one additional core subject.
  • Earn a combined overall passing average for all scheduled courses for the year; and
  • Demonstrate an appropriate level of reading comprehension as measured by Lexile score.
