Allatoona Hosts Bunk Bed Build Day

Written by Newspaper Staff Reporter Avery Myers
On October 23, Allatoona is hosting a community service event to support the mission of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP). Abby Adams (grade 10) is the leader of the event and describes SHP as being "dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering beds to get all the kids in our town off the floors or couches and into beds so they can get a good night's rest." The Bunk Bed Build Day will run from 9 am to 12 pm on campus, and it is being hosted by HELM and the flag football team. The Build Day is open to any student, and all of those who participate will earn six community service hours. You can also donate a twin comforter set to earn an additional four hours (drop off the bedding in room 2207 with your name attached).
During the build, Abby reports that "students should come prepared to drill, sand, stain, construct, and more! There is no experience required! We will teach you how to use all the equipment as you rotate through the stations to build a bunk bed." Having equipment is not a requirement. They will provide all the tools necessary for the build, but if you want to bring your own gloves and/or goggles, you are welcome to do so. However, there will be some provided at the event.
You can contribute to SHP's cause outside of this event by going to their website: www.shpbeds.org. On the website, you can donate money and sign up for other build days and even delivery days (when they deliver the beds to the kids). If you know someone in need of a bed, you can also apply for one on the website. This organization is extremely important and provides children with something that we often take for granted. Abby Adams says that giving the children a proper bed to sleep in "will improve their health, happiness, and ability to learn at school."
