Trojan Lacrosse and Warrior Baseball Players Receive AOW Award

Cobb Schools’ Athlete of the Week (AOW) program is a weekly recognition of male and female student-athletes performing at high levels in their sport, in the classroom, and in their school communities. The program is made possible by support from BSN Sports.

This week’s AOW winners are a lacrosse player from Lassiter and a baseball player from North Cobb.

Lacey Scherholz, Lassiter, Lacrosse

The Lady Trojans won the 5A-6A Area 2 title thanks to consistent play from Lacey on both ends of the field. Her performance last week was nothing short of remarkable. Not only did she lead her team to victory in two out of three intense games against top-ranked opponents, but she did so with an exceptional display of skill and leadership.

Scoring a total of 12 goals and providing a crucial assist, Lacey's offensive prowess was on full display. Her ability to find the back of the net consistently, especially in high-pressure situations, underscores her talent and determination. Moreover, her contribution extended beyond scoring, as evidenced by her impressive seven draw controls and six ground balls, showcasing her versatility and tenacity on the field.

"Lacey is committed to play Division 1 Lacrosse at East Carolina University," said her coach Angela Brunner. "Her consistent excellence on the field, evident in her current season-leading 48 goals and impressive career points tally of over 115, speaks volumes about her dedication and skill as an athlete."

"Her exceptional performance last week undoubtedly deserves recognition, not only for her individual achievements but also for her invaluable contribution to her team's success. She embodies the spirit of a true Athlete of the Week!" concluded Coach Brunner proudly.

Jay Abernathy, North Cobb, Baseball

The Warrior baseball team finished the regular season one game behind 7A-Area 5 region-leader Walton and will host Dacula in the first round of the GHSA state playoffs. Jay is a four-year varsity starter and leads the team in batting average, stolen bases, and hits. He is a senior and committed to play D1 ball at Tennessee next year.

"Jay received all-state recognition in both his sophomore and junior seasons," said North Cobb Head Coach Tom Callahan. "He is a driving force offensively and plays outstanding defense. He is approaching a school record for stolen bases in a season."

"Last year, he was the first underclassmen ever named Team Captain. He is conscious of his role as a leader and makes his teammates better through encouragement and prodding when needed. Other teachers have remarked on his maturity and several attended his signing ceremony because they think highly of him. A science teacher mentioned that Jay looked out for a special ed student in his class and included him in groupwork. He is a bonafide MLB prospect, but also an extremely humble, thoughtful, and mature young man heading for big things!" Coach Callahan said about his Athlete of the Week.

Well done, Lacey and Jay! We can't wait to see what the Trojans and Warriors do in the postseason and how you both perform next year in college. Great job supporting these exceptional student-athletes Lassiter and North Cobb!
