Special Interest: A Comeback to Remember: Real Madrid Beats PSG on Aggregate in the Champions League

Written by Newspaper Staff Reporter Derek Oliveros
The second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 was played on March ninth, with the most eventful game being Real Madrid playing PSG. After the first leg played on February fifteenth, PSG was up one goal after a one-to-zero victory thanks to a stoppage time goal from Kylian Mbappe. Going into the second game, PSG continued to dominate with Mbappe scoring in the thirty-ninth minute, giving PSG a two-goal advantage on aggregate. PSG kept hold of the game and made it look as if they were guaranteed to advance, but the situation quickly began to fall apart. After PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made the mistake of holding onto the ball too long, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was able to get his first goal of the night. Fifteen minutes after the first goal, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric was able to thread a pass to Benzema, and he was able to slide through the PSG defense and score his second goal of the night, making the series level on aggregate. Real Madrid refused to slow down after the second goal, immediately taking the ball from PSG after kickoff and bringing it up field, setting up Benzema once more, giving Benzema his hattrick and completing Real Madrid’s stunning comeback victory. This is another year that PSG sees an unexpected early exit from the Champions League, the fourth time they’ve been knocked out in the round of 16 over the past six years. Real Madrid will continue their impressive form into the quarterfinals, which will begin on April fifth.
