Campbell MS Celebrates Cultural Diversity at IB World Night

May 8, 2025 — IB World Night at Campbell Middle School began over a decade ago, shortly after the school received its International Baccalaureate (IB) certification. Though the event has seen changes in name and leadership over the years, its purpose has remained the same: to celebrate the vibrant diversity of the school community and highlight the core values of its International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP).
The annual event has grown into a beloved tradition that now includes a showcase of student service projects, each designed to address a real-world community need. These projects are carried out through one of the four types of service—direct, indirect, advocacy, or research—and framed within one of the MYP global contexts: Identities and Relationships, Orientation in Space and Time, Personal and Cultural Expression, Scientific and Technical Innovation, Globalization and Sustainability, or Fairness and Development. This connection encourages students to see how their local actions relate to broader global challenges and opportunities.
The World Night celebration comes to life through sampling foods from over 25 countries, enjoying global music, and uniting local families and businesses by honoring the unique cultural heritages that shape the community. About 350 people, including students, faculty, families, and community members, attended the event. It was a true celebration of world culture for both the mind and the palate.
"The attendees left with a deeper understanding of the IB MYP framework and the incredible work our students are doing," said IB Administrator Tanika Parrish. "More importantly, we wanted them to feel inspired by the students' passion, creativity, and thoughtful engagement with real-world topics. We hope the evening fostered a greater appreciation for other cultures, helped attendees learn more about local businesses and restaurants in our community, and celebrate the diversity that makes our school so unique!"
As always, the Campbell community responded to the event with enthusiasm and heartfelt support, and momentum for the event continues to grow each year. Many expressed sincere gratitude for bringing the community together and highlighting various cultures in such a meaningful and inspiring way.
"We are proud to say that it was a tremendous success," said IB Coordinator Matt Brown. "We could not have done it without the incredible efforts of our staff, students, parents, and volunteers. The participation, creativity, and support of the community brought the spirit of international mindedness to life and truly reflected the values of the IB Middle Years Programme."
In addition to wide community support, Principal Dr. LaEla Mitchell, Bookkeeper Cornelia Washington, IB Project Coordinator Dr. Dawn Whipple, and DLI Coordinator Jessica Richardson were instrumental in providing Ms. Parrish and Mr. Brown with everything they needed from the school. The CMS Jazz Band provided music for the event, and various other clubs and sponsors were also key to the evening's success.
"It was a memorable celebration of culture, learning, and community," concluded Mr. Brown with gratitude about the 2025 IB World Night.
