South Cobb students earn scholarships to Alabama State Universit

Before the Alabama State University President’s Bus Tour pulled away from South Cobb High School, three students were awarded on-the-spot acceptance and scholarships

South Cobb senior Ethan Foma was awarded the Black and Gold Scholarship, which provides $4,000 a year to help pay for tuition, required fees, and on-campus room and board. The scholarship covers a maximum of eight semesters for freshmen and a maximum of six semesters for college transfer students.

The Academic Incentive Scholarship awarded to senior Melissa Smith pays full tuition and a $500 book award.

Benjamin Howell earned the Academic Excellence Scholarship from Alabama State University. The scholarship pays full tuition, required fees, and books.

“I was truly honored to receive the scholarship, and I’m thankful to South Cobb for providing me the opportunity,” explained Ben. 

In addition to the top three scholarships, all South Cobb seniors who applied to ASU with a 2.7 GPA or higher were awarded the President’s Promise Scholarship, valued at $8,328 annually. 

The bus tour to South Cobb included a college fair hosted by Alabama State University (ASU) so students could get a closer look at ASU and its degree programs. Alabama State is the oldest state-sponsored HBCU, founded in 1867 by nine formerly enslaved men, today the University enjoys a reputation as a world-class institution of higher education and scientific research.

“It felt good to have my school represented at South Cobb. I literally smiled from ear to ear the entire time. I love Alabama State University, and I hope this visit encourages more of our students to apply,” declared Ms. Shetera Smith, South Cobb counselor, and Alabama State University alumna.
