Charlotte McClure: The lady in the lobby

When you enter McClure from the main entrance, you are greeted by a portrait hanging on the wall. The picture is L. Charlotte McClure, the educator for whom our school is named.

Charlotte McClure, known as Miss Charlotte to her students, friends, and neighbors, moved into our community when she was two years old. She spent the rest of her life living and serving here. Her forty-four-year career as a teacher and counselor was honored through the naming of our school.

After graduating from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Miss Charlotte returned and began teaching the primary grades at the Acworth High School in the 1930s (at the time, Acworth served all grade levels). When North Cobb High School replaced Acworth HS in 1958, she taught history and eventually became the school's counselor.

Her former students recall her being kind and caring, and say she wouldn't tolerate nonsense from her students! Miss Charlotte retired in 1976. She and her sister, Miss Fannie B, loved gardening and tending the flowers in their yard. They were also very active members of Acworth UMC, to the extent that a building is named after them there. The McClure sisters are also honored by the Cobb County Retired Teachers Association through an annual scholarship, which is given to prospective and current teachers to further their education.

We think Miss Charlotte would approve of our school's four words: encouraging, excellence, enthusiasm, and innovation, as they reflect her teaching philosophy and the values she instilled in her students. She certainly seemed to live by them, and we are proud to carry on her legacy.

In 1992, Miss Charlotte was invited to the 30th class reunion of the North Cobb class of 1962.

She tells a story that happened in Miss Fannie B's classroom when her former students were in first grade.
