Wheeler’s Colben Landrew Makes His College Commitment Known

October 15, 2025 — The Douglas L. Lipscomb Gymnasium, home of the Wheeler Wildcats basketball program, was abuzz with anticipation as senior small forward Colben Landrew prepared to announce his college commitment live on the CBS Sports College Basketball Channel.
Before today’s event, recruiting website 247Sports listed five potential landing spots for the 6-foot-6, 205-pound prospect. Insiders, though, felt that only two teams—Louisville and Connecticut (UConn)—were truly in the running for the #2 ranked player in Georgia.
As the livestream broadcast delivered his statement nationwide, Landrew concluded his remarks saying, “As you know, I can only choose one school, but I want to say ‘thank you’ to all the coaching staffs that took the time recruiting me. With that being said, I’m going to the University of Connecticut.”

The cheers of his basketball teammates, family, and friends rang out through the arena, supporting his college decision. Landrew, ranked 21st overall in the nation by 247Sports, helped Wheeler win the school’s 10th basketball state championship last season, with 19 points in the title game—including his team’s final 10 points. Winning is a big reason why he chose the Huskies.
“I knew that Coach (Dan) Hurley would push me every day,” Landrew said of the two-time National Championship college coach. “It’s a winning program, and I’m a winner. I just want to win.”
That’s something the UConn fans will be happy to hear. While Landrew looks forward to putting on his college basketball jersey on the Storrs, Connecticut campus next Fall, his next order of business will be chasing back-to-back state titles with his Wildcats teammates this season.
“We’re locked in. Ready to get to the season,” Landrew said. “Going for two-time state championship, I can’t wait.”
That is something that Wheeler fans will be happy to hear, too.
