Cobb Schools' Director of Athletics, Don Baker, recently earned his Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). With this designation, Mr. Baker became the second Cobb athletic director to earn the certification.

To earn this distinction, Mr. Baker had to demonstrate exemplary knowledge, contributions, and ongoing professional development in the field of athletic administration. The certification process included a thorough evaluation of educational background, experience, NIAAA Leadership Courses, and professional contributions. It culminates with a practical written or oral presentation project.

Josh Mathews, Pope's Athletic Director, earned his CMAA late last year, but Mr. Baker was close behind finishing the work required to earn his. He finished his final oral exam and gave his final presentation to finish the rigorous certification process in early April.

"Obtaining the CMAA Certification was easily the best form of professional development that I have ever experienced," Mr. Baker said. "I cannot underestimate the value of leadership training and the benefit it provides, and the certification the NIAAA offers is second to none."

While the certification is completely voluntary, it requires many hours of work and learning during evenings and weekends and consumes much of one's free time. Mr. Baker had to be self-motivated to finish the work.

With a little over only a thousand in the whole country, Mr. Baker joins Mr. Mathews as Cobb County's only CMAAs.

"It is great to have another in the District achieve the certification," said Mr. Mathews. "The role of Athletic Director is complicated, but having the professional development and networking that NIAAA provides is invaluable. The process involves learning from other ADs across the country, which is so beneficial in decision-making and growth in leading through high school athletics."

Cobb's Chief of Staff, Dr. Kevin Daniel, had nothing but praise for Mr. Baker. "He is an extraordinary Athletic Director for the District," Dr. Daniel said. "He is committed to excellence and very deserving of this recognition."

Mr. Baker and Mr. Mathews may be the first, but they hope they will not be the last in the District to earn this national certification.

"It is my hope that other athletic leaders will obtain these national certifications," said Mr. Baker. "Our goal is to give Cobb County School District a national platform to showcase our athletic leaders, coaches, and student-athletes. NIAAA's curriculum of various certifications develops accountable leaders through positive working relationships and service to help us accomplish this."
